I am an English language teacher with 3 years of experience teaching group and private lessons. I have experience teaching adults, teens and children: students of all levels. I have taught test preparation classes such as IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge Exams (KET/PET/First), SAT, and ACT; general English to all levels; and Business English for working professionals.

Creating community in a classroom is essential for language learning. It sets the mood as learning a language no matter what age is a vulnerable experience. Having a sense of community in class gives students confidence. I usually start with an ice breaker- a conversation, funny anecdote, video clip, creative exercise, journaling, mood meters etc. I also like to do class meetings: a free space to discuss goals and find a common goal that we can all aim towards. Group projects and breakout groups (online) are other tactics I enjoy using so students can create relationships with each other. My ideal classroom, if you could see a tangible relationship being made with a string, looks like a spider web. Sometimes I even use a ball of yarn and when you pass it you ask a question and it forms a sort of web; this represents the connection in the room and reinforces that we are all on the same path. Sometimes even creating teams and playing competitive games at the end of lessons is an effective bonding activity
