About Michael

Since graduating from universities with one master and two bachelor degrees in foreign languages, history and art, I have been giving both public and private ESL lessons in classes of up to 60+ students. My practical experience includes the following:

Taught college level oral English, IELTS (reading, writing, speaking and listening), etc. to students aged 18 to 20 in groups of 30 per class
Prepared 10th grade students for the IELTS exam aged 15 to 16 in groups of 35 per class

Taught professionals in the Adult Education College writing English aged 21+ in groups of 30+ per class at a prestigious Chinese university
Taught college level oral and writing English, American culture, history, geography, etc to students aged 18 to 20 in groups of 30+ per class
Taught high school students both English and German aged 15 to 17 in groups of 30 per class at a key Chinese school
Taught 8th and 9th grades speaking and listening in middle school aged 13 to 15 in groups of 60+ per class
Taught elementary school students oral English aged 6 to 12 in groups of 30+ per class for 7 straight years at a Guangzhou city school

Taught adults as well as college, middle and high school students of all ages at a training center one-on-one, pair and in groups of 4 to 15 per class
Administered extracurricular activities
Volunteered to tutor immigrants to the US

Other achievements include:

Tutored Chinese students who passed conversation tests for entry into Australian schools abroad
Edited graduating students' theses
Coached students to win city and provincial English contests
My students participated in and won talent competitions and I also entertained students at the talent shows

About the lesson

I have taught ESL for over 20 years to students ranging from first graders to graduate and postgraduate professionals.
I base my classes on meaningful personalized or relevant but interesting topics to the student(s).
My teaching method is Communicative Language Teaching and Learning which is centered on helping students of all ages not merely to know the language but to apply what they know in "communicative" contexts. It is student-centered instruction founded on a learning-by-doing approach.
Total Physical Response is a technique that I find especially successful in teaching young children. It is used as a way of accommodating learners to gradually accustom themselves to communicating in the target language.
