About Alpha
Hi, I'm Alpha Bah. I hold an honors degree in chemistry from Fourah Bay College and I'm now doing a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Alberta. I've taught chemistry and math to high school students for 2 years and tutored privately for 4 more, so I know where students usually get stuck and how to get them unstuck.

My teaching approach
Chemistry is a story, not a pile of formulas. Most students struggle because they're memorizing without knowing why something happens. I start with the "why" (what the molecules are doing), and the equations follow naturally. The same goes for math: I want you to see where a method comes from, not just copy the steps.
Techniques I use:
- Learn by doing- Instead of watching me solve problems, you solve them while I ask guiding questions. I only step in when you're truly stuck.
- Error hunting- We study your mistakes closely. A wrong answer usually points to one specific misunderstanding, and fixing that is faster than re-reading a chapter.
- Explain it back- If you can teach the idea back to me in plain language, you own it. If not, we find the gap.
- Honest feedback- I'll tell you kindly and clearly what's working and what isn't. No empty praise.
A typical lesson (60 minutes)
1. Warm-up (5-10 min): a quick check-in on how the week went and what's confusing right now.
2. Concept refresh (15 min): one topic, explained with a picture, an analogy and a worked example.
3. Guided practice (25 min): you work through exam-style problems while I coach.
4. Mistake review (5-10 min): we look at where things went wrong and why.
5. Wrap-up (5 min): a short summary and a small, realistic task for the next session.
For lab-heavy courses, a session might instead focus on calculations, data handling, error analysis and writing up results clearly.
What sets me apart
- Six years of combined classroom and one-on-one teaching, so I can adapt when an explanation isn't landing.
- I teach both chemistry and math, which matters because many chemistry struggles are really math struggles in disguise (moles, logs, rearranging equations).
- I've studied and now do research across different education systems, and I remember how it feels to be a student who just needs it explained differently.
- I'm patient, I joke around a lot, and I believe that confusion is a normal part of learning, not a character flaw.
Who my lessons are for
- High school students preparing for exams in chemistry and math
- Undergraduates in chemistry, biology, engineering, health and related programs
- Beginners and returners who feel behind and want to rebuild their confidence
Lessons are in English and can be one-on-one or in small groups.
