About Susan

I have been a certified ESL/language teacher in US public schools for 16 years, latterly using the WIDA consortium standards accepted by 38 states. I've given private lessons throughout most of that time as well. I have taught a total of 3,000 public school students (2,400 of those in three memorable years teaching Spanish to 800 students every 6 days!) Of the ESL students in the last three years of documentation 90% went on to advance or exit on the annual WIDA ACCESS test.

About the lesson

I've divided my ESL teaching career evenly between Spanish speakers and students from all over the world, so I'm quite used to teaching people whose native languages I don't speak. I'm also comfortable with tutoring students who've been taught according to the British educational paradigm, particularly regarding vocabulary. My preferred teaching style is interactive, through stimulating presentations, reading, writing, conversation and games. I love it when my students like to talk, and especially when they get to know each other and have run; I want to get to know them in order to individualize their lessons. Although I love young people, I prefer to take adult students who have a vested interest in achievement; I also prefer groups (students without prior relationship who choose to take leveled lessons at the same time) to individual lessons because their experience is so much more enjoyable. It helps if students are technologically savvy enough to use programs like PearDeck, Kahoot, Flipgrid or NewsELA in conjunction with their Zoom session to enhance their ESL experience.

My lessons will be given via Zoom until the end of the pandemic, though afterward I would be delighted to give lessons in my home with group rates (see immediately below).
I would love to give Zoom group lessons to people with similar interests or personal connections, and am very happy to give a standard group discount of $5.00/hour/person.
There will be a 50% cancellation fee for lessons because preparation time and regular practice is so essential to ESL good practice.
