About Valerie
I first enjoyed teaching when I worked as a student assistant for my University (California State University, Sacramento). I would grade papers for two of my professors and enjoyed answering questions and providing feedback to my fellow students. These questions always helped me to improve my own confidence! I learned to appreciate making mistakes and how to do better :)
I love math because it is endless. You can spend a lifetime studying it and will always be learning more. I would love to share my passion for learning with you.

My ultimate goal in working with you will be for you to feel comfortable with Calculus. If you are studying to become an engineer or physicist, Calculus will be at the core of many fundamental physical phenomena that you must understand. I will encourage you to ask as many questions as possible.
If you are studying Calculus for the first time, we will slowly describe the types of problems that inspired differential Calculus. For example, if we want to find the instantaneous velocity of a rocket, we need to find the slope of the tangent line to the position curve at the desired point in time. To solve this problem, we need to learn what the derivative is. To learn what the derivative is, we will need to learn what the limit is. The learning process will be organic. We will pick up theorems along the way to build the definitions we will need.

Valerie and I met many years ago as classmates in introductory level math and physics. Even back then, I saw what a patient and disciplined learner Valerie is, something she today instills in her own students. Valerie went on to complete her engineering degree from California State University, and that background enhances her ability to teach how advanced math works. Valerie’s passion is to translate the universal language of math in a way that mirrors and clarifies what is taught in class. I highly recommend Valerie as a tutor who will inspire, cultivate deeper thinking, and support students throughout the study process.
