About Soma
Hi! With 10+ years experience in the corporate sector, and nearly 2+ years in teaching (English as the medium), I am currently just "few hours" away from finishing my Certification in Teaching Assistant from the prestigious Victoria University. Few hours, as the lock-down prevented me from finishing up with my school placement. I come from an ESL background myself, which helps me understand those little spots where we can get tongue-tied, and that encourages a great student-teacher interaction free of any shame or inhibition. I studied at English medium schools and worked with people from almost all over the world, for a period of 12 years plus. Happy to help anyone who might use some, I look forward to getting in touch with some fantastic individuals to have some fun yet useful sessions exchanging knowledge and experience. Cheers!

I am not perfect, but there are a few things that I think are a must when learning English. And I may add to all these eventually as we go.
> Culturally aware of where you are coming from, and cultivate relationships.
> Emphasize that learning English should not be confined to just the grammar, but should spread through the entire range of our daily activities.
> Developing productive English skills: Speaking and writing, over and above reading and understanding. While all four are important, we often assume someone who is skilled in the latter two, will automatically be skilled in the first two. But functionally, the first two need more work and are more relatable.
> Patience: speaking slowly and allowing my students to well understand the words before they respond.
> Grammar, spelling: Learning English means an increase in our vocabulary. However, this does not have to be emphasized so much that we use harder, longer words. Instead, simple, clear and crisp English is the order of the day. So we focus on grammar, spelling, using the dictionary, expressing in a way that everyone or most people can understand us.
> Use multiple modalities: Learn in a way that will involve speaking, reading, writing and listening.
> Stay bilingual: The beauty of all individuals like me and you, is that we know a different language very well. Often, we know more than one. And now also are going to know English. We are multilingual and we keep it that way. When I was learning Japanese (briefly) I found it easier to relate it with my mother tongue and that way I learnt better. I don't think we need to exclude what we already know so well. That is why I said : "exchange" knowledge and skills.
