About Christopher

I’m a native British English teacher with more than 20 years’ professional teaching experience. I hold a BA (Hons), MA and PGCE, the recognised British postgraduate teaching qualification, and began my career teaching in the UK college system.

Since then, I have taught students from around the world, from ambitious private learners to professionals working in banking, medicine and Big Four firms.

I specialise in helping intermediate and advanced adults use English with greater accuracy, confidence and sophistication. My students come to me for Business English, IELTS and Cambridge exam preparation, professional communication, writing, interviews, presentations, and the finer points of advanced British English.

Over the years, I have helped students achieve their target IELTS scores, secure new jobs, progress professionally and move to English-speaking countries.

I don’t offer a generic, one-size-fits-all English course. Your lessons are built around your level, weaknesses and objectives, whether that means eliminating persistent grammatical errors, making your spoken English more natural, preparing for an important interview or taking your English from competent to genuinely advanced.

English

Your English may already be good. My job is to make it better.

In our first session, I identify exactly what is holding you back: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, fluency, writing, confidence, or simply the small habits that prevent good English from sounding polished and natural.

From there, I design the lessons around you.

For professional students, we can work on meetings, presentations, interviews, written communication and the English you actually need in your career. For IELTS and Cambridge candidates, we focus closely on the skills and strategies required by the exam. For advanced learners, I concentrate on precision, natural expression, register, vocabulary and the errors that often survive years of English study.

Lessons are conversational and relaxed, but they have a purpose. I will correct you, explain why something is wrong, show you how a native British speaker would naturally express the same idea, and make sure recurring weaknesses do not simply disappear beneath an hour of pleasant conversation.

You will receive an individual learning plan, targeted materials and, where useful, work to complete between lessons.

If you have an interview, examination, presentation or other important deadline approaching, tell me before the first lesson and we can build a focused programme around it.

I teach online and work particularly well with motivated adult learners from B1 to C2 who want measurable improvement rather than simply conversation practice.

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I was born in England and I teach English every day. But more than this, I love my language and was fortunate to have an English teacher who inspired me to write. I'm now a novelist.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I think Winston Churchill for his tenacity; William Wilberforce for bringing an end to slavery (which reflects our positive attitude towards our multicultural society); and Basil Fawlty, who typifies the eccentric British character!
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

My favourite words include: sleazy, inexorable and disparity. Least favourite are those Americanised words which are unnecessary (but which I find myself using, nonetheless.)
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It's the language of business, media, medicine and transport. It has over a million words and can express almost anything.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Phrasal verbs. There are so many of them! Rules that get broken time and time again. The native language of the learner presents its own difficulties. The answer is patience and application on the part of both teacher and learner. And making sure lessons are enjoyable, even when tackling the hard stuff.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I was expelled from school at the age of 12, missed four years of education and ended up with an M.A., becoming a teacher. Never write off the seemingly impossible-or improbable.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living abroad has helped me to realise that the language I took for granted as being easy isn't easy to people from other countries. I believe this has helped me to be a sympathetic teacher and one who adapts his vocabulary and syntax when teaching intermediate-level students.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Passion. Plus a teaching degree and twenty years of experience 😉
