When you take the time to tune out of life’s fast-paced antics, you can tune into a more balanced rhythm. Maybe it’s time to journey into a sense of flow and tranquillity. Sounds great, doesn’t it? Yoga is fast becoming one of the world’s top wellness activities. It’s not hard to see why people are trading their frantic cardio workouts for purposeful poses on the mat.

So, rattle those dormant muscles and fold into a downward dog, you’ll soon unearth some great yoga spots in the city of Auckland. Let’s find a sense of calm, switching off our devices and stepping into an invigorating state of mind.

Let's go

Why should I launch into Yoga as a practice?

Put your hand on your heart, sit back and relax; let’s tune into the present moment. What’s happening around you currently? Do you feel restless? Perhaps you feel your breathlessness vividly? Having awareness for the moment is one of the fundamental mantras of yoga as a practice. Your focus could be split at the moment. Maybe you’re tempted to reach for your phone or tablet? This is totally normal and with life being so fast-paced, I’m not surprised.  But don’t despair! There is hope in this technological hustle and bustle. We find this by diving into our yoga practice.

Yoga Lessons and poses

As an ancient practice, yoga stands the test of time for a reason. Some of the big benefits come from yoga’s psychological, physical, and spiritual aspects.

Those who practice yoga find themselves in touch with a sense of balance in their life force, also known as ‘Prana energy’. To unpack further, our bodies are a group of chakras that provide us with a unique type of energy to draw from. Yogis are always out to balance their energetic body so that they feel in harmony with themselves.

As well as your energetic chakras, yoga can provide many physical benefits too. Stretch out your legs like an oak tree and ground yourself like strong roots, let’s get into what else yoga will cover.

Are you keen to try out yoga?

So, what can the practice do for you?

Become a master of flexing and stretching those muscles

Are you always slumped over your computer, weaving your back into an uncomfortable, jigsaw position?  Yoga can help you with this by correcting your flexibility. One step at a time, it builds power and resilience to your yoga positions. This brings grit and strength back to your body.

We all deserve to have our beauty sleep

Do you find it tricky to sleep at night? Stray from one side of the bed to the other, restlessly? Once you learn the ropes of yoga you will start to feel more restful as your body is energetically fighting against stress.  Life can be so full-on, so allow yourself to catch a yoga class. Yoga movements can prep your body for a peaceful night’s sleep, free from counting sheep.

Wrangle those mood fluctuations to feel more centered

Yoga makes you feel great. It helps the circulation within the endocrine glands and assists hormones that are linked to mood oscillating. That’s science-speak for keeping your mood levels balanced. If you’re struggling with maintaining your mood compass, upset and drained one minute, and lethargic the next; maybe give yoga a try. Kick those blues to the curb or leave those sporadic moods for another day: today is about balance.

“There’s so many types of yoga, which one is going to work for me?”

Don’t worry, at first the choices may be overwhelming. Yet if you have a good gauge of what you are looking for, then choosing the right yoga type will be breezy. Just have a think about what you are wanting to achieve from the start, and then you’ll be on your way.

Are you wanting to go hard-out and get sweaty under extreme temperatures? Maybe Hot Yoga could be the start of your yoga practice. But be wary that this type of yoga requires determination and grit.

Yoga types to look into

  • Yin Yoga: Are you keen to start in a fun way? Yin Yoga is good for drawing your awareness back to the moment. It’s very meditative and helps you in your journey on becoming a human pretzel, with flexibility as a focus.
  • Hatha Yoga: This is one of the best yoga types to start with, you will learn just 20 poses and perfect these through repetition.
  • Kundalini Yoga: This is very intensive and can be one of the most difficult, as it’s spiritually demanding and extremely physical.  Chanting and singing are at the centre of this practice. All in all, Kundalini yoga allows you to activate your spine.
  • Ashtanga Yoga: With this type of yoga repetition is the sole focus. You will learn to master 6 poses perfected over time. Your focus and sense of self-awareness will help you feel very connected to your breathing.
  • Vinyasa Yoga: Maybe you want to become a better athlete? Vinyasa Yoga could be great to really push yourself.
