About Alan
I graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Theory. During my studies, I became captivated by the rhythm of language, which sparked my interest in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). I hold a TEFL certification from the Boston Language Institute and have experience teaching a diverse range of students, including business professionals, individuals preparing for the TOEFL and TOEIC exams, immigrants, and political refugees.
I have had the privilege of teaching at several institutions, such as Massasoit Community College, Embassy CES at Merrimack College, Oxford Intensive School of English, and Kaplan International. Additionally, I have taught at community centers, such as CentroLatino and LanguageWorks
My students were from Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Learning is a conversation between the student and teacher. As we practice speaking, we engage in a dialogue where I listen and provide corrections for grammar and pronunciation errors. Effective listening is a critical skill that we will develop by incorporating recordings from reputable sources such as NPR, BBC, and Voice of America.
I use both traditional methods of grammar instruction, including practice exercises, as well as the Socratic method where I ask questions to explore different grammatical constructs when there are multiple options available. I also value and encourage student input, as every student has unique learning goals and preferences.
For children, I recommend having them read age-appropriate stories and correcting their pronunciation. It's also helpful to ask them questions about the story to ensure they understand it, and then have them practice retelling the story through speaking or writing exercises. Additionally, learning new vocabulary from the story can help expand their language skills.
