About Tage

I am a former uber driver, French major, and a recent TEFL holder. I am a lover of language and am an amateur linguist but have not had to the ability to pursue this passion of mine until now.

I have travelled to Italy, France, Switzerland, and Anguilla as a youngster. I got to live a French family in Troyes, France for a week when I was 17. I am an avid jiujitsu practitioner and play with people of all backgrounds and ethnicities, including many native Spanish speakers. My girlfriend is ethnically Mexican, but long ago lost her command of the language as a child, despite this she always asks me to come along to local Mexican mercados to go shopping. Despite neither of us speaking Spanish with any formal skill, she tells me she feels more confident communicating with me around because of my background in Latin languages. And even as a French major, I remember being able to pick up a Spanish language newspaper and understanding everything I was reading. Despite not being fluent in the language at all, I find I can pronounce and understand Spanish with not too much difficulty. As to my studies at Portland State University, my major was French, but my passion was never exclusively for that language in particular, but for foreign language learning in general. I had planned on double majoring in German, but the linguistic credit I need to gain my BA (an interesting class on French phonetics) only applied to French and thus settled with German as a minor. At current, I have been slowly but surely picking at Portuguese and can say at least 2 phrases. In learning these particular tongues, I have gained some interesting insights into the particularities of English, what makes it unique as a language, and its certain distinct nuances that make it stand out among its Indo-European siblings.

Although I am not as fluent in French and German as I had been in the past, I believe I am competent enough to carry on a conversation in either language, and just as importantly I do understand the language of customer care and interpersonal intelligence. I have some training in counselling, and a great number of hours working in customer care. I have had many years as an uber driver interacting with many different types of people from all walks of life and from all over the world. And believe I could be of great service to a great many of your foreign students. While I do not have access to my university diploma, at present, what I have learned about language is invaluable and will show through my work as a tutor and teacher.
