About Carolina

My name is Carolina and I love languages: I teach Portuguese to foreigners, and I can also help Brazilians to feel more comfortable to speak in English.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Portuguese from USP (University of São Paulo) and did research in Linguistics and Translation, which gave me a solid foundation for studying languages and making comparisons between them.

As a child, I was first fascinated by the lyrics of some Brazilian songs (jn Portuguese). Soon, at the age of 9, I started studying English on my own, because I fell in love with Bon Jovi's music and desperately wanted to understand the lyrics of their songs. I bought then bilingual books with song lyrics and translations, and I was always glued to a Michaelis dictionary, checking every word... Later, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, websites in English and American online friends became my motivation. In high school, from ages 12 to 14, I had two American English teachers, and they helped me a lot to speak English freely, joyfully, and without feeeling shy! Because they praised and supported me, I became quite confident, even when I made mistakes: the important thing was to communicate well. Later on, I became a Portuguese teacher for foreigners and I needed English quite a bit to help beginners, which gave me an incredible experience of communication in another language, as well as sharpening my eye for linguistic comparisons between English and Portuguese!

About the lesson

I'm not an English "teacher," at all; I actually help people "unlock" their English because I simply talk and chat without fear of making mistakes, and even when I make mistakes, I keep talking fearlessly :)! Come and join me! Let's have fun talking IN English and also ABOUT English! When I don't know something, I'll tell you right off the bat and we are going to research and learn things together.

Native English speakers don't care so much about mistakes, as long as we can communicate well (and be kind)... Let's speak English without feeling shy! And let's find ways of communicating... When we don't know how to express something, let's find out!

I have a degree in Letters from USP (Bachelor's in Portuguese), and I've been studying English independently since I was little (I love it!!!). I learned to speak freely and without inhibitions with (wonderful!) American teachers in my school. My university degree in Letters was focused on Portuguese Language, Linguistics and Translation, so I'm always analyzing English linguistically and making comparisons with Portuguese. I am actually a teacher of Portuguese for foreigners, and this teaching experience has brought me practive and made me even more confident in speaking English: because I see that when the foreigners speak Portuguese freely and without fear, communicating well, we don't even pay attention to any "mistakes"! If there are mistakes, we correct them and laugh, making everything light and fun! And that's how it works on the other side too (when we speak English with them)!

Anyway: I'll help you with everything I know about English and, in what I don't know, I invite you to learn together with me! :D
