About Ashley
I'm Ashley Hussain, and before becoming a teacher, I spent over two decades working in policing, as well as time in customer service. Those years taught me something I carry into every lesson: strong English skills aren't just about passing an exam, they're about being able to navigate everyday life with confidence — writing a clear report, understanding a formal letter, communicating effectively under pressure, or simply expressing yourself clearly when it matters most.
That's exactly what Functional Skills English is designed to do. It's not about abstract literary analysis for its own sake — it's about equipping you with practical, real-world skills: the ability to read and understand information accurately, to write clearly for different purposes and audiences, and to communicate with confidence in work, education, and daily life. For many people, it's also a gateway qualification — opening doors to further study, apprenticeships, or job opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
I went on to complete a degree in Drama and Contemporary Performance and a PGCE in Secondary Drama, and I currently teach drama in a secondary school. That background means I understand how people learn best isn't always through traditional methods — sometimes it's through storytelling, practical application, and building confidence step by step. I bring that same approach to English tutoring: patient, tailored, and focused on making sure you don't just pass the exam, but actually feel capable and confident in the skills behind it.
I want to teach because I've seen firsthand — both in my previous career and in the classroom — how much of a difference solid communication skills make to someone's opportunities and self-belief. Helping someone get there, especially when exams have felt like a barrier before, is genuinely rewarding work.

I know exams can feel daunting, so my lessons are all about building your confidence alongside your skills. We'll start with a relaxed diagnostic session so I can get a feel for where you're at, what you find tricky, and what you're already good at — then I'll build a plan around you, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
We'll work through both the Reading and Writing sides of the exam, but in a way that makes sense and doesn't feel overwhelming. For Reading, we'll practise finding information quickly, understanding what a text is really saying (and why), comparing texts, and looking at how writers use language to create an effect. For Writing, we'll cover planning, structuring your ideas clearly, getting your spelling and grammar solid, and writing in the right tone for different situations — whether that's a formal letter or a more casual piece.
I'll also share practical tips and tricks for the exam itself, like managing your time and understanding exactly what examiners want to see, so nothing catches you off guard on the day.
We'll do plenty of practice with real past papers, and I'll give you honest, helpful feedback each time so you can see yourself improving. As your exam gets closer, we'll do some final run-throughs together so you walk in feeling ready and confident, not stressed.

Ashley joined the drama department at our school on maternity cover and immediately demonstrated his vibrant enthusiasm and passion for teaching drama. He is a creative and dedicated teacher who is a great member of the team and he inspires the students he teaches from year 7 to sixth form.
Ashley and I began working at the same school at the same time, and I quickly saw how naturally he built positive relationships with students. He soon became known across the student body as approachable, caring and genuinely invested in their progress.
What stands out most is Ashley’s passion for teaching and the way he encourages students to look beyond simply achieving a grade. He helps them understand why they are learning, not just what they need to remember, which makes his teaching meaningful and engaging.
From working alongside him, I have seen the trust students place in him and the confidence he inspires. Ashley is patient, supportive and committed to helping every student develop and achieve. I would highly recommend him to any student looking for a knowledgeable, encouraging and dedicated tutor.View more recommendations
