About Debbie
I was born and raised in Keimoes, Northern Cape, a monolingual community. I enrolled for tertiary education at UWC in the Western Cape, a very multilingual and diverse province. Language was a barrier, but also the only language that could bridge all these differences. I majored in Linguistics at UWC and in my second year was offered a fully paid scholarship to complete my studies at one of the best universities in the US. Four years later I completed by BA degree as a English Major and German minor. Clearly Language studies became my forte. I love learning a new language and finding correlations between languages and cultures. In this world that constantly wants to point out our differences to create friction, I believe we are more alike then different.
In my mission to master English as a FAL (First Additional Language) I have been through every stage of the learning process, thus can relate personally to any struggles and frustrations learners may be going through.

Reading is essential to everything in life. It improves vocabulary, grammatical communication skills that leads to a better and more balanced life. The more you read, the more you know, and the more you know the better and informed decisions you can make. Unfortunately, we have become a community of non-readers and as a results language comprehension has fallen to the bay side because the fundamental part of reading which is language comprehension is falling through the seams. It is heartbreaking to meet a Grade 4 learner in SA that cannot read or express themselves in their FAL (First Additional Language) or even in their HL (Home Language). As an English major and Afrikaans as my mother tongue and experienced Foundation Phase teacher. I believe I possess the necessary knowledge and experience to aid Foundation and subsequently Intermediate Phase learner on their educational journey. In addition I offer my services to learners with any intrinsic barriers to learning. My experience as Educational Assistant at a special needs school aided in my knowledge and understanding of the former. I offer my services at the learners homes, for comfort and familiarity and subsequently create an educational environment at the home.
