About Kaitlen

I started tutoring ELL and philosophy as an undergraduate at 19. I became passionate about studying abroad when I was named a Mellon Fellow and spent time in Austria during my junior year at 20. Right after I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my BA in English and philosophy, I taught abroad for a year at an elite private school in Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar. Upon returning to the US, I spent a year as an AmeriCorps volunteer in rural West Virginia writing copy for a public radio station and tutoring at-risk high school students. In 2014, I was accepted to one of the top MFA poetry programs at Virginia Tech where I had a chance to work with Nikki Giovanni, Bob Hicok, and other nationally known writers. While I was there I taught multiple sections of composition and creative writing. Upon graduation in 2017, I accepted a job teaching English to 5-7 year old students in Thailand. I returned to the US in 2018 and began building an in-person tutoring base. Unfortunately, many of my clients ceased in-person tutoring sessions due to the pandemic. I accepted a job as an operations specialist position managing roughly 300 MCAT teachers and tutors that I held until recently when my department was shut down due to budgetary restrictions. Currently, I manage a small farm in rural West Virginia that is home to a farm animal sanctuary. I have spent the last ten years revitalizing my family's abandoned farm and utilizing the space to grow organic produce. Recently, I started taking in unwanted farm animals and became 501 C3 certified. I also founded a small artisan co-op and bake shop in town.

Engagement and results are my primary focus. Your success or the success of your student is my main priority. I pride myself on helping students leave my lessons feeling confident that they can succeed. Every student is unique, not only in their needs, but also in their learning style. During my first lesson or class, it is always my goal to understand the student’s goals and then to understand how they learn. If the student thrives on repetition, lessons will be structured and timed. If a student learns best using puzzles and games, we will implement these interventions. Once I understand a student’s goals, their proficiency level, and their learning style, we can build a curriculum tailored to their success. I believe that learning resources should always be specifically needs of the student(s). I have successfully helped students craft essays and applications for international and highly competitive scholarships, but I have also helped students successfully write their names after years of trying. I have extensive experience with differently abled and neurodivergent students. I’m happy to tailor lessons and use my resource banks to tailor lessons for students of any age or proficiency level working on writing, reading, composition, grammar, or related test prep. Roughly half of my experience is in teaching or tutoring students who are learning English. In addition to teaching abroad in Bulgaria as a Fulbright scholar, I’ve also taught in Guatemala and Thailand. I have a passion for helping ELL students acquire and master English.
