About Taylor

Hello! I'm a working actor in the city. I hold a BA from Georgetown University in Washington, DC, with majors in Philosophy and Theatre & Performance Studies and a minor in Chinese. I also hold an MA in Professional Acting from the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, UK.

I have tutored multiple students in introductory and advanced French, and have helped middle school and early high school students with writing, grammar, and study skills. Writing is my specialty, and I especially like helping students learn new words and discover unexpected and exciting ways to use language - whether in English, or in French!

I've also helped all three of my younger brothers complete their college applications - essays included! - and would be very interested in helping current juniors begin to think about their application processes, and helping current seniors with their applications.

Recently, I've worked a lot with high school students and graduate students who are struggling to complete writing assignments. I find that the best method is to approach daunting tasks like this step by step. The student and I will consider the prompt together, and if the student has not already done so, we'll make an outline. (I love lists and outlines; I think they make large undertakings seem smaller and more manageable, and in my experience, my students often do, too.)
After that, it depends on the student. I've worked with students who can go away and write a first draft on their own, and who will then ask me to read it over to check for clarity and errors. I've also worked with students who prefer to share their screens, and who need my support as they write each sentence. I'm very happy to work either way - just as long as the student understands that they need to be the one to write the essay, and that while I can certainly offer suggestions, I can't do it for them.
When I work with younger students (who usually don't have essay-writing assignments) I do my best to learn as much as I can about them during our first session. If I can gauge what kinds of interests they have, I can often figure out how to make learning interesting for them. For example, I used to tutor an eight-year-old boy who loved to draw, but hated his French class. We would work our way through French vocabulary and French short stories together, and he would draw pictures of the vocabulary words, or of the characters in the stories. By the end of our sessions, I always made sure he could name the things that he was drawing in French.
Of course, each student is different, and I always strive to cater to each individual's needs. Overall, I consider myself to be an efficient, practical, and engaging tutor.
