About Don

As a highly skilled English and Communication Arts teacher, I bring both deep academic expertise and real-world teaching experience to the classroom. My passion is helping students become powerful, confident writers who can express their ideas clearly, think critically, and advocate for themselves in both academic and real-life contexts.
I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching, a Master’s in Education, and an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree, and I am currently a Doctoral Candidate (Ed.D.) in Education. My advanced education and research-backed practice ensure that every lesson is not only standards-aligned but also grounded in best practices for student achievement and growth. I understand how to meet learners where they are, and how to move them forward with targeted instruction, consistent feedback, and engaging writing tasks that reflect the world they live in.

Over the years, I’ve helped hundreds of students—from struggling readers to gifted learners—become stronger, more intentional writers. Whether it’s crafting powerful thesis statements, developing persuasive essays, building research-backed arguments, or writing narratives that reflect their lived experiences, I make sure students are not only writing better—but also thinking more deeply.

My classroom is a space where students feel seen, heard, and challenged. I inspire confidence by creating a respectful, inclusive environment where students can take academic risks. My approach to teaching writing is dynamic, culturally responsive, and grounded in helping each learner grow into their fullest potential.

If you're looking for a professional who understands the art and science of teaching writing—and who holds students to high standards while supporting them every step of the way—you’re in the right place.

My Approach as a Writing Tutor and English Teacher

1. Teaching Method and Techniques

My core teaching method is built on explicit instruction, gradual release of responsibility, and responsive teaching. I believe in teaching writing as a thinking process—not just a skill to be assessed. Here’s how that plays out:

-Modeling (I Do): I demonstrate each step of the writing process—brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, and editing—by thinking aloud, annotating, and using mentor texts.
-Guided Practice (We Do): Students write collaboratively through shared and interactive writing experiences. I ask guiding questions and provide feedback in real-time.
-Independent Practice (You Do): Students apply the skills independently, with structured feedback cycles and opportunities to revise based on rubrics and peer input.
-Mini-Lessons: I use focused mini-lessons on specific writing strategies—like crafting a thesis statement, integrating evidence, or varying sentence structure.
-Conferencing: One-on-one writing conferences are used to differentiate instruction and support student voice, clarity, and coherence.

Writing Portfolios: Students track their progress with portfolios, including rough drafts, revisions, and reflections.

My teaching is influenced by Lucy Calkins’ Writing Workshop model, Jeff Anderson’s approach to grammar in context, and Paulo Freire’s emphasis on student voice and agency.
