I’m a firm believer that language and writing classes should be tailored to what students need. One-size does not fit all, in my book. I've taught students from age 12 to 50-year-old CEOs.
With younger students, I help them with a variety of tasks including grammar homework from their school or even help them prepare a debate for Model UN. With undergrad and graduate students I often serve more as someone to bounce off ideas with and a guide in terms of proper academic structure.
The approach I always take is empowering students so they can communicate their needs and observing what they require.
