I first met Clay in Mrs. Ledbetter's second-grade classroom. We became good friends when we were in the same Cub Scout den, remained friends all the way through high school and college, and are still close friends today.

Clay has been a "bookworm" as long as I can remember. It seemed like he always had a book in his hand and another in his backpack. All that reading definitely paid off, as he grew up into one of those people who always knows just the right word for any occasion. I also remember he tried out for "Jeopardy" back in the 1990s. He passed the written test to qualify for the show but apparently wasn't photogenic enough to actually be a contestant.

Besides being one of the smartest people I know, Clay is a genuinely nice person and goes out of his way to help others and make sure everyone is comfortable in a social situation.

I know he worked in the translation industry for a long time, then became a freelance writer and tutor around 15 years ago. I know he's had a lot of clients over the years, and I remember he has worked with non-native English speakers a lot, helping them with tutoring and a variety of writing projects, including helping several grad students write/edit their PhD dissertations.
