About Danesca

Hello, I'm Miss D, an Afrikaans and English language tutor specialising in learners between the ages of 11 and 13.

My passion for tutoring comes from seeing how many learners struggle to understand language concepts, not because they lack ability, but because important information is often lost in translation. Many classes are taught entirely in the language being learned, and when that language is not a learner's first language, it can be difficult to grasp exactly what the teacher expects.

I am able to see the potential in each student. See what their individual needs are. I tailor each lesson to that student's learning abilities and I also have patience and will not push a student to excel over their potential.# My Teaching Methodology

I specialise in tutoring Afrikaans and English learners between the ages of 11 and 13. Lessons can be conducted in either Afrikaans or English, depending on the learner's needs and level of understanding.

My teaching approach is based on a simple principle: a learner cannot apply knowledge they do not fully understand. Many students struggle because language lessons are often taught entirely in the language being learned. When that language is not their first language, important concepts can be lost in translation. My role is to bridge that gap by explaining concepts clearly, breaking them down into manageable steps, and ensuring that learners understand both what they are learning and why they are learning it.

Every new student begins with an assessment. This allows me to identify strengths, learning gaps, and areas that require improvement. Based on the results, I create a personalised lesson plan designed around the learner's individual needs and academic goals.

A typical lesson includes a review of previous work, explanation of new concepts, guided practice, discussion, and independent application. Learners are encouraged to ask questions throughout the lesson, as active participation is one of the most effective ways to build confidence and understanding.

My lessons focus heavily on explicit grammar instruction because learners aged 11 to 13 are transitioning from simply learning language rules to applying them independently. Key areas include:

• Verbs
• Adjectives
• Nouns
• Punctuation
• Sentence construction using the STOMPI method
• Vocabulary development
• Reading comprehension
• Language definitions and rules

Writing is another important focus area. I teach essay writing using a structured "When, Why, How" framework, which helps learners organise their thoughts, develop logical arguments, and express themselves clearly. Students also learn summary writing techniques, comprehension skills, and how to analyse prescribed literature and poetry.

To reinforce learning, learners regularly write essays, complete summaries, and work through previous tests and examination papers. We discuss difficult topics together, analyse mistakes, and develop strategies to improve future performance. I also help students understand the difference between informal communication and formal academic writing, ensuring that they develop strong language habits for school and examinations.

What makes my approach different is that I do not simply provide answers. I teach learners how to think through language problems independently. My goal is to build confidence, understanding, and long-term language skills rather than short-term memorisation.

Every learner progresses at their own pace. Some improvements happen quickly, while others require consistent practice over time. I believe that every step forward matters, and I work alongside each learner to help them achieve measurable progress and greater confidence in Afrikaans and English.

My aim is not only to improve marks but also to help learners become confident, capable communicators who can apply their language skills successfully both inside and outside the classroom.

Turning Confusion into Confidence.
