Building a solid foundation is the key to understanding and mastery of the guitar.
Whatever your style of choice, this highly challenging and wonderfully diverse instrument requires that you not shy away from the middle of the fretboard or the ever-challenging theory. There's no real mystery in it. The mystery is in the human that plays the instrument. So, let's remove the mystery from the fretboard.
Most of what I've seen (like 90%) in the way of guitar method books, is an unfortunate waste of trees. Most guitar lessons focus on getting you to imitate this and just do that like this other musician. We're not parrots. Imitating is not the same as emulating. These issues aren't anybody's fault. It's just that teaching kids was never properly evolved to the teaching of adults. But if you're an adult, you ought to be treated and taught like one. Let's work together to build your skills.
A big thing I do is go through your existing knowledge and look for holes. Then we fill them. If you're just getting started (yep, I teach beginners), we build you a solid foundation from the start.
In the decades I've been doing this, very few people have walked into my studio who have had all the facets of this complex instrument covered. Of course, their own understanding is what led them to realize this and seek me out. I applaud anyone with the courage to say, "Here's this thing I love to do, that I don't totally understand, and I need help." Education can be a little painful this way. Educate also comes from the Greek "to open." And that's just what I seek to do too; open you up to all the possibilities your guitar can offer.
