About Rich
My name is Rich Ward. I have worked in marketing and advertising for over 30 years as a Creative Director and Copywriter. It has been my teacher, mentor and the one who whispered in my ear, “You can write.” The day I heard this simple phrase, my life changed. It gave me the confidence to understand that we all have the words within us to change perceptions, make people laugh, make people cry, construct both compelling emotional and rational arguments and, in the case of advertising, shift products. I’ve worked for both large multinationals and boutique agencies in London and New York, selling most things from cars to condoms to chocolate. From Toyota to Durex to Nestlé, then onwards to Peroni, Lynx, Birds Eye, AstraZeneca, Unison, Warburtons, P&O Cruises, Grolsch, Amnesty International and many more. I have also used this passion for the written word to write the lyrics for a musical with a Grammy Award winning musician and have also had a series of children’s books published. Having worked at board and creative director level, I have relished motivating individuals and teams to fulfil their potential whilst engendering loyalty. I believe there is potentially a writer in all of us, and I would love to help bring out this talent and nurture it. All it needs is an arm around the shoulder and someone to whisper in your ear, “You can write.” University : - Bournemouth Art college - BA Art and Design [2.1] School : St Phillips Grammar School, Edgbaston , Birmingham A Levels - Art [B] - History [C] - English Literature [C] Prizes and Scholarships : 2 Bronze New York Film Festival: Writing and directing. 4 Entries D&AD. 5 Entries Creative Circle. 2Campaign Press Award. 1Entry “Best Ads that Never Ran”. Richard and I worked together in various advertising agencies over the years, during which time he consistently produced scripts and copy that not only won (and retained) large amounts of business, but also delighted both clients and the target audience, frequently resulting in agencies picking up highly coveted, international awards.
Rich has a remarkably agile, creative brain, and can be relied on to come up with original solutions, whatever the brief - all written with a meticulous eye for detail, and a deep understanding of the craft of communication.
As well as being an absolute pleasure to work with - demonstrating both remarkable patience, and a determination to understand and solve clients' problems, however difficult the brief may seem, Rich has always been hugely encouraging to younger, less experienced writers. Thanks to his guidance and instruction, many aspiring creatives have gone on to achieve great things in the industry - and beyond.
Part of the joy of working with Rich is his passion for all things creative - as demonstrated by the great success he has achieved outside of the confines of marketing and communication.
Not content with writing some of the most memorable advertising campaigns and films of the last 30 years, he has co-authored a best-selling series of chlidren's books, which will soon be televised, and co-written both 'the book' and the songs for a lavish stage musical, that has attracted interest from international producers.I have worked with Rich In two advertising agencies in London where he was a copywriter, creative group head and creative director. What impressed me most about him, apart from his excellent copywriting skills, was the amount of time he put into mentoring and nurturing his young creative teams. This seemed to spark an interest in them to embrace and constantly push their writing skills. Equally impressive was that he was always there for them when they needed help, reassurance or a confidence boost. A truly personable, kind and inspiring man, I feel very lucky to have learnt so much from him over the years I have known him, and know that others in my industry also have the utmost respect and gratitude for all he has taught them.
