About Leonora
My background is English literature and language and I hold an MA in English from Edinburgh University and Queen’s University, Canada.
My main passion is anything to do with English and literacy - reading, writing, good speaking, knowledge of literature, Verbal Reasoning and comprehension / composition papers.
I have three children so I’m comfortable working with children of any age – they are always fascinating! I am an extremely warm person and it's important for me to make a personal connection with students, as I put a lot into my teaching. Sometimes the teacher and student are not an ideal fit, and I am always honest about this.
I also work with a charity in London to teach English to refugees in the UK.
I have taught on-line for over 15 years, but can offer in-person teaching if travel is a reasonable driving distance.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I’ve been tutoring English for over 20 years and I am expert at raising English levels, winning school places and getting students to love reading, writing and English.
I cover any aspect of English up to age 14 – from entrance (even scholarship) places at the most exclusive private schools in the UK, to places at the top grammar schools, to general support of any kind.
My success comes from my genuine passion for English and its importance as a central part of all good education; and also from a true connection with children. Children learn well if they are laughing and being creative and talking about what they like and I shape our lessons around their natural interests. An engaged, happy child is one who will care about their work and associate English with fun, positivity and self-expression.
It's very important to me to build positive associations with English, along with a true love of reading that will last for a lifetime. Every child I work with I aim to instil this natural interest and teach them how to build reading and creativity into their everyday life.
I also work very well with families who are not originally from Britain, as children often have culture gaps that can be a disadvantage when it comes to general understanding, entrance exams and response to English texts.
My most extensive experience is in preparing children for secondary school exams, in particular the 7+, 11+ and 13+ entrance tests.
My students have won places at the following schools, among others:
Boys:
Eton College
St. Paul's School
Winchester College
Kingston Grammar School (KGS)
Tiffin School (multiple students)
Wilsons School (multiple students)
Claremont Fan School
Girls:
Wycombe Abbey (scholarships)
Cheltenham Ladies’ College (the school’s top scholarship – The Beale Award)
Lady Eleanor Holles School - 7+ and 11+
Wimbledon High (scholarship)
Latymer Upper (scholarship)
Godolphin and Latymer School (scholarships)
Downe House
Benenden School
Guilford High
Headington School
Putney High
Tiffin Girls' School (multiple students)
Nonsuch School (multiple students)
Henrietta Barnet School
I approach each student with a twofold strategy: first of all, what are their learning goals; and second, how do they learn best. I enjoy finding ways to make subjects and learning a pleasure for each student, so that their natural curiosity will drive them forward, and then be buoyed by increasing success. This involves understanding their interests and personal values, and aligning the teaching as closely as possible to them. A personal connection with a student is important for me, as I invest a lot of time and effort into helping them achieve goals.
Please note: due to the enormous competition for school places in recent years, I now only offer 2-hour slots to entrance exam students. This ensures that I can maximise their chances of gaining a place at their chosen school.
