About Hugh

I am a first-year student studying Film and Literature at the University of Warwick.

Outside of academics, my main passions are for film (naturally), cricket and music (back home, I play bass in a band).

I recently completed my A-Levels at Sir Thomas Rich's Grammar School in Gloucester, where I achieved an A in French (as well as an A* in English Literature, an A in Psychology and an A in EPQ). I also received the highest mark out of my peers despite a rocky start to my sixth form journey- I had even told my teachers I was ready to drop French entirely.

However, it was the work I did outside of the classroom that encouraged me to continue to develop my language abilities, immersing myself in French movies, series, and music. I found a legitimate connection to the culture that, despite my teachers' best efforts, just wasn't evident in the classroom. I hope to help other students realise that languages don't have to be as boring as the specification makes them seem, and help them to gain a skill that is invaluable in our ever-connected world.

About the lesson

I was a one-on-one tutor for younger students at my school in a variety of subjects. This ranged from tuition for the 11+ to GCSE language students, meaning that I have experience working with all manner of pupils and areas of study.

My approach focuses on working through a paper or exercise book, allowing the student to work at their own pace while focusing on what will be necessary in exams. Each session, lasting an hour or longer, would focus on an area the student finds most difficult, allowing them to develop their understanding of a particular topic or area of the spec (for example, if they struggled with English to French translation) without the pressure of a classroom environment.

These lessons would be suited for GCSE and A-Level students looking to refine their exam technique. Languages are difficult and often draining when so confined to a specification; I aim to show students how they can achieve their best and develop invaluable skills for their future when faced with these constraints
