About Michael

Bonjour! I'm Mike, founder of an online language company called Languages Collective and professional online languages tutor. Over the past 15 years I've had the pleasure of meeting lots of French learners of all ages from GCSE/A-level students to 75 yr olds+ who are motivated to learn a 2nd or 3rd language! I've realised that what makes language learning easier and more fun is getting over the fear of making mistakes. And my lessons are focused with this in mind. Understanding and Being Understood = Succés! (success)

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Both, i guess! Im native English, so this is my 1st language, while French and Spanish i've been inspired to learn by many cool people i've met.

My first Spanish teacher, Carmen, when i was 12yrs old, came to class one day and played us on CD (yes, I am totes up front about my age!) 🙂 some music by Dominican Republic singer Juan Luis Guerra. Something inside me stopped when I first heard those bachata rhythms, and i knew I had to understand this español language!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

French - has to be Edith Piaf. I love the sentiment "Je ne regrette rien" and i think it says a lot about the French being proud to be sometimes a bit different 🙂

Spanish - Carlos Alcaraz. I m mad about tennis & watching this kid strutt his stuff around the tennis court makes me think about the culture of Spain being one of passion, sweat and exuberance.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

In Spain the tradition of sobremesa or taking time after the meal to enjoy the company of your friends & family is something i fell in love with as a student in Sevilla.

In French, they use the word piccolé to mean slightly tipsy after a glass of wine.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It opens so many doors for me. Profesionally, personally, romantically.

It allows me to connect with almost 800 million speakers worldwide. Now, thats a lot of conversations I can have.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

French pronunciation can be tricky. The main thing is get to learn the basics of phonetics and you are up and running.

Spanish is spoken very quickly. Listening to bite-size chunks can help with this as a learner.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I once was told that a good way to remember the word for swimming pool in French was that "c'est interdit de pisser dans la piscine" - it's forbidden to piss in the swimming pool.

I've never since forgotten the word and it highlights the importance of making it personal to you or funny in some way to make a word memorable.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I once picked fruit in France for 3 months as a summer job. Best learning experience EVER . My French went form sounding like a kid at school trying to speak French to actually sounding like a native. Je te jure!
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

Im kind, curious and fun. And I love sharing my enthusiasm for language with others.
