Viola da gamba lessons. Freelance performer based in Montreal, baroque music specialist, McGill graduate. I offer lessons in bass, tenor, and treble viol to all levels of players.

About Tristan
I completed a B.Mus and M.Mus in viola da gamba & early music performance at McGill University under the instruction of Betsy MacMillan and Elin Soderstrom, along with a minor in music theory. Throughout my time at university I devoted my time to studying the historical literature on the viola da gamba and uncovering different playing techniques, and worked hard to put this knowledge into practice. I also studied historical music theory and composition, and other aspects of performance practice such as the realization of figured bass.
I have participated and performed in festivals and workshops across North America such as the Montreal Baroque festival, Amherst Early Music festival, and Early Music America's Young Performer's festival. In 2022 I received the second place and the Founder’s prize as a soloist in the Mathieu-Duguay Early Music Competition. I have given workshops and lectures about the viola da gamba around Canada and the United States, and have taught students of many different levels of experience.
Currently I perform in Montreal as part of the ensemble Les Barocudas, and have had the great privilege of studying and working with renowned musicians from around the world such as Hank Knox, Sarah Cunningham, Paolo Pandolfo, Erin Headley, and Joëlle Morton.

Learning music is about more than just playing an instrument. By studying and playing you learn about yourself, exercise your mind, and gain an invaluable tool of self expression, all while being able to enjoy the music you make as you grow!
Music is my passion, and I am thrilled to share with players of any level, whether they are complete beginners or already proficient. Fostering a safe and friendly environment for learning is my top priority. I work with my students and tailor each lesson to their needs, with flexible and attainable goals that make progression feel rewarding.
I began learning music as a guitarist and studied jazz before entering university and transitioning to the viola da gamba. Though I focus primarily on music of the Baroque and Renaissance, I also perform new contemporary works, and compose. Most importantly, I believe that the viola da gamba has as much of a place in modern music today as it did in the music of the past. Whatever a student’s interests are in learning the viola da gamba, I will endeavour to teach them the proper techniques to play and express themselves comfortably and easily, as well as the ways to maintain their instrument and keep it in good playing condition.
