About Emily

I've been teaching & tutoring students of all ages for 11 years. I began teaching right out of college, as Clark University's Visual & Performing Arts Adjunct Faculty, where I reformatted the semester-long course's curriculum by myself, allowing flexibility depending on each class.

I have worked as a private tutor for almost 10 years and childcare for almost 20. I am highly intuitive to each student/child's individual needs, enjoying figuring out the best way to communicate so information is absorbed and *they* feel successful. As a private tutor, I have worked & am comfortable with a diverse group of students (age, at higher or lower grade level in certain subjects, socioeconomically, race, learning disabilities from Autism to ADHD to general focus/concentration difficulty, etc).

For over a decade, I have been teaching theater (focusing on improvisation) in a variety of settings for a wide range of ages & abilities:
*2 nationally-recognized comedy theaters
*many summer & vacation camps for kids 5-18yo, including children on the autism spectrum, selective mutism, behavioral challenges (ODD, CD and ADHD), fetal alcohol syndrome, of different socioeconomic backgrounds, and other mental health factors.
*corporate training workshops (as well as building curriculum) for positive collaboration, problem-solving & team-building
*developed a specific curriculum for a weekly improv comedy class, geared toward adults with severe mental illness (as part of a partnership with Club Nova, A Clubhouse International chapter)

Additionally, I work as a writer. I have worked primarily as a copywriter/editor for social media/creative marketing & creative writing (poetry, memoir, creative non-fiction). As well as being experienced in all forms of writing (essay, fiction, formal letters, resume & cover letters, stage & screenplays, RFPs, etc).

Lastly, I am proficient in French.

I'm an adaptable, intuitive and playful educator able to quickly assess students' needs and which tools will help to absorb information successfully. Student typically thrive and feel motivated in a fun, supportive & structured environment, with patient educators that allow room for failure. I rarely have felt unable to connect to a student or to find a way in to their brain - watching the growth of my students in their confidence & capability is one of my greatest joys, truly. As a private tutor, I am highly collaborative, flexible and prefer to keep an open dialogue between all of us (you, your child & myself) about goals, improvements or challenges.

While each session/lesson is ultimately determined by these specific goals we will all agree on, I will also always be prepared with additional lessons/activities based on our goals.

If you are looking for more than homework help, please message me. I am able to create a weekly curriculum for your child if you're looking for them to catch-up or be further challenged by a specific subject or learn subjects that are not already taught in their school.

The first session will be more of a consult to "test out the tutor waters" - see if we are a good fit for each other with the intention of setting everyone up for success. I'll ask your child(ren) to tell me about themselves, about school:
*their personal experience/interpretation on how school/learning feels
*their favorite/least favorite things about school
*subjects/classes/people make them feel awesome & successful
*subjects/classes/people that feel frustrating & challenging
*how they think they learn best (I didn't know until I was in my 20s, so no pressure)
*their favorite book and/or animal and/or candy

Also, hearing from you, parent/guardian is important to me. Ideally before that first session (but after is fine), I'd love to have a brief chat, preferably over the phone or by email, so I can hear about your goals for your child(ren) are (understand how you feel they are as students, in which subjects they shine or need guidance, your expectation and goals for my work with your child). I have found that keeping a boundary between me & your children and *our* continued dialogue sets up our sessions for success smoother, removing any potential trust or loyalty concerns for your child - I can just be their tutor (please let me know if that or really, if *any* of this does not make sense!).

*I work on a sliding scale*
Please message me if money is a deal-breaker factor for you. My primary goal is to help students & empower youth.

Our first session is 30-min, for free, as a chance to meet your child, get to know each other, work through a few bits of various subjects so I can get a sense of what is needed for both challenging areas & learning environment.

Please reach out to discuss rates. I'm flexible & hope to find a solution that works for each of us. I can also answer any questions about factors that affect rate. Discounts are available, if paid upfront for each month (in addition to bulk pricing listed above).

My base rates, as a starting point:
1. $50/hr for basic homework help/facilitation (1 student)
2. $75/hr for a blend of homework help & weekly customized lesson plans (1 student)
3. $100 ($75/hr + $25) for homework help/weekly customized lessons (2+ students in the same session)
