About Henry
I have been teaching all fields of science to secondary school students since 2008. At various times I have taught classes in biology, chemistry, Earth science, environmental science, and physics. That variety of experience has given me a deep understanding of the challenges students face in mastering each of these distinct sciences.
My tutoring experience has included work with several dozen adolescents in grades 6-12. I have helped students improve both mathematical reasoning skills, which are vital to success in science class, and provided them with tools useful for mastering the new and complex vocabulary that goes with the concepts. My students have consistently achieved significant increases in their grades, including going from failure to an A or B in one term.
I hold a masters degree in science education.

My teaching method is built on two pillars: first, find ways to make the subject interesting to students and, second, pay attention to the student's learning style.
I use tools that go beyond the textbook or the homework handout. These might include art and music, writing, hands-on learning activities, nature, and group work. It's very important to keep coming back to the larger relevance of the detailed ideas in a science class and to help a student tie each of those ideas together so that they see and appreciate the progress they are making.
Individuals vary widely in the ways they most effectively process information. In partnership with the student, I devise a progression of lessons that take advantage of the student's aptitudes and talents. All students can be good at science if they can access it in a way that works for them!
