About Chris
I started teaching in 2004 in the remote Indigenous community at Wingellina, WA. This was the introduction to working with young people with a history of poor engagement in school. This interest in helping disengaged youth has continued ever since.
Most recently working in Wollongong at the Edmund Rice Flexible Learning Centre provided the opportunity to teach young people in an urban environment. Prior to this, working for the same organisation in Alice Springs provided a wide range of opportunities to work with teenagers with a history of low engagement at school, substance abuse problems, learning difficulties and traumatic events negatively impacting on their ability to learn.
In Alice Springs there was the chance to teach Arrernte, Warlpiri, Anmatyerre, Luritja, and Pitjantjatjara students at Sadadeen Primary School in the Indigenous Education Unit. There was also the opportunity to work with teenagers detained in the Alice Springs Juvenile Detention Centre.
Before moving to Alice Springs teaching Indigenous adults computing skills throughout 12 remote communities within Western Australia in the role as IT trainer for Ngaanyatjarra Media.
In addition to this spent 3 years working near the WA, SA and NT border teaching English to indigenous students at Wingellina Remote Community School. While living in Wingellina, I became strongly involved in the local community; learnt the local aboriginal language - Pitjantjatjara, formed strong bonds with elders, went on weekend hunting trips with locals and played on the local football team.
Demonstrating exceptional versatility, also spent 3 years as an Abattoir Worker for Fletcher International, 1 year managing Tjirrkarli Community Store in WA, 3 months as acting Community Development Advisor for Tjirrkarli, 3 months working within the Department of Land Management’s Camel Cull Program and 12 months working as a bicycle mechanic in Alice Springs.
