About Paul

I am genuinely interested in students' interests and aspirations. I connect these motivating factors to the subject material, which I break into "chunks" to promote learning and retention. I teach new material in such a way that it "layers over" prior learning, which serves as a foundation, and I provide interactive support -- "scaffolding" -- during the entire learning process.

About the lesson

The following is an excerpt from a lesson I wrote. It speaks for itself.

Historical events can have complex and surprisingly beneficial effects. For example, the northern part of China was conquered by the Jin in the 12th Century and by the Mongols the following century, yet southern China prospered. Why? This was because tens of millions of Chinese moved south, which bolstered the economy and launched a period of intense innovation and technological growth. Agriculture expanded: this was when rice became the staple of the Chinese diet and tea consumption skyrocketed. Painting, mathematics, astronomy, and other arts and sciences blossomed. Although only half of China was actually self-governed, the Chinese people experienced what many scholars consider “a golden age.”

24. Which of these would NOT be an example of technological innovation?
__ a. Use of the compass
__ b. The former Chinese practice of foot-binding
__ c. Manufacturing porcelain
__ d. Advanced metalworking techniques

25. As used in line 5, the word bolstered means:
__ a. Supported
__ b. Decentralized
__ c. Neutralized
__ d. Consolidated

26. The tone of this passage can be described as:
__ a. Inconclusive
__ b. Motivating
__ c. Neutral
__ d. Ironic
