About Vasundhara

As a child, when I visited my grandparents during school summer breaks, I often got an opportunity to witness my grandfather's work closely, who was a bureaucrat. In due course, I noticed a rather strange practice - women-centric issues were dealt with last, and every other problem took precedence over the concerns of women. Discrimination in these insidious forms that women encounter in every sphere has motivated me to fight for women's rights.

As an undergraduate student, my career goal was to join the bureaucracy or the development sector. Therefore, I opted to major in political science, where I studied 'Feminist Theory and Practices' paper. It helped me develop a nuanced perspective on gender justice and made me see the world through a lens of gender and development. After graduating, I actively read and researched gender issues and interacted with women living in urban slums around New Delhi. As part of my fieldworks, I found that despite policy efforts, girls continued to drop out of schools in large numbers, especially after reaching puberty. For me, this was a matter of grave concern, and my immediate inclination was to work in this domain and further the cause of women's health and empowerment.
As part of my professional engagements, I interact with women confronting several gender-related cases of abuse, such as domestic violence, sexual harassment, lack of menstrual hygiene awareness, etc. These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to work for gender equality and our rights. Using spatial research, I designed interventions for Delhi Metro Rail and was able to help millions of menstruators on the go. Later, I re-launched project Saheli, which aims to provide sanitation and hygiene facilities for rural and underprivileged women. Taking my vision forward, I started two initiatives, Period Shala - a menstrual health training academy, and Aazaad Khayal (free thought) - a safe space encouraging ideas and conversations about topics impacting all communities. Currently, an all-women team runs both and I hope to build a diverse and inclusive team with queer and trans individuals on board.
