Ambassador

One of our best tutors. Quality profile, experience in their field, verified qualifications and a great response time. Alec will be happy to arrange your first English lesson.

About Alec

I have 20 years of teaching around the world, from Argentina to China, Russia to South Africa. However most of my time has been spent teaching whole classes in London, or training younger teachers, so I am passionate about a range of students and their needs.

About the lesson

I am encouraging, engaging and warm but purposeful and professional. You’ll have fun but learn loads! I am systematic, organised and strategic in helping each student progress in reading, writing, speaking and listening. I can teach toddlers phonics or Shakespeare to undergraduates. I have experience in speech writing, business English and I am a GCSE examiner.

I've known Alec for over 20 years, since our university days, and more recently as a neighbour and fellow church member. He is highly diligent, reliable, and principled. He is also a committed, intelligent and experienced teacher, and a very good educational communicator. He's empathetic and fun too, with a love of football in particular, but above all else, he will always apply maximum focus and energy to the task of helping his students to excel in their learning.

I worked with Alec for over three years as his Head of Faculty for English at a busy inner-London secondary school in a deprived area. Alec is a highly experienced and skilled teacher of English from age ranges 11-18, he has worked with a wide range of student abilities; from those with the highest level of need to those striving for the highest possible grades and has produced excellent outcomes for the students he has taught. Alec is dedicated to ensuring students achieve their very best and is a very reliable individual. He has a particular specialism with students that have a lower level of literacy and those with EAL needs. Alec is an excellent teacher and I was very sad to lose him as a cornerstone of my English department.

1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?
I have loved reading since childhood, but inspiring teachers as a teenager provoked me to teach myself. I started private tutoring last year so I could work from home and help with our children.
2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).
I teach English Language and Literature from Primary level to Business level. I tutor History, Geography, Religious Studies and Citizenship online in the UK, Northern Europe and Asia.
3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?
My Sixth Form English teachers inspired me that every idea, if backed up, can be valid.
4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?
Subject knowledge, adaptability and emotional intelligence.
5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.
A decade ago I met a highly intelligent 11 year old, a rather serious Jehovah's Witness. I challenged him to enter the UK national GCSEs for 16 year olds and after some tutoring he passed!
6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?
As previously discussed many answers are valid in English but not all are wise!
7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?
My passion is seeing young people grow holistically.
8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?
I love English, and all my various subjects. I love people of all backgrounds. I will find a way to help anyone who wants to learn improve.
