About Lucy

Hi, my name is Lucy, I'm a first year maths student at The University of Manchester.

My interest in tutoring started during high school, where I took part in a peer support scheme helping other students with their maths, where I found I could put my maths abilities to good use helping others. I realise not all students love maths as much as me but passing your maths GCSE is so important for going on to higher education and employment opportunities. I love to help students achieve grades they might not have thought they were capable of, whether that is just passing the exam or you have a passion for the subject and would like to achieve a high grade.

I have a particular interest in helping students who are neurodivergent or struggling with mental or physical health issues and may not be in school full-time. Furthermore, I myself have ASD and struggled with anxiety while I was at school, so know how difficult it can be for students with different learning needs to get the most out of education, and keep on top of work if they are not in full-time attendance.

My focus will always be on providing a supportive environment for students, ensuring that they feel confident in themselves and their abilities, no matter what grades they achieve.

About the lesson

Hi,
I tutor students for GCSE exams in maths and physics. I offer one to one sessions and also small group sessions of up to 3 students, allowing you to split the cost. Lessons are an hour long. I offer online tutoring and in person lessons, at the student's home, for those who live locally. I offer a free first session to develop a personalised learning plan, addressing the student's strengths and weaknesses, as well as goals for the tutoring sessions.

I have a student led approach to teaching, where structure and style is determined by the particular learning needs of the individual. I can then help students to understand concepts taught in class and build confidence through repeated practice and past paper questions on specific topics, and go through timed papers to improve exam technique. I can also offer help with homework, but focus on helping students to understand the questions and come up with answers themselves.

I have 2 years experience tutoring students in a peer support scheme ran by my high school, where high achieving students were chosen to mentor other students who were struggling with their work. I have excellent knowledge of the curriculum, having completed my secondary education fairly recently. I achieved A*, A*, A at A Level in Maths Further Maths and Physics where I studied a mix of AQA and OCR, but have knowledge covering all exam boards at GCSE Level. I have competed in the British Mathematical Olympiad during sixth form, achieving a bronze medal, which put me in the top 100 students who entered. I am therefore very capable of teaching students looking for top grades as well as those who may just need a pass to go on to college.

Details

Sessions are 1 hour long.

£20 per session or £15 for an online session, plus £5 for travel if far from my home in Rusholme but we can discuss this since it depends on distance from my house.
