About Jinhao

I’ve been tutoring for over five years now. It started with helping friends and classmates, and it’s grown into something I genuinely enjoy and take pride in. I graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in math, and I’m currently working toward my Master of Teaching at OISE — a program that combines both theory and practice in preparing future educators. The experience I gain through my training and practicums continues to inform and improve how I support students. Further, the course in science of learning that I took in my fourth year has provided me with profound insight into evidence-based approaches, and I'm excited to see them in action! Math has always stood out to me as both useful and deeply connected to how the world works. It’s a subject that shows up everywhere — and understanding it can offer powerful insight into everything from science to economics to daily decision-making. As a tutor, I aim to create a space where students feel comfortable asking questions, working through confusion without judgment, and overall just making mistakes and failing. We truly learn the most from mistakes and failures, and fostering a low-stakes learning environment where students are able to make mistakes and failures is one of the key ways to address math anxiety and enable students to progress further in math. My main priority is making sure students leave every session with more clarity and more confidence than when they arrived. I love seeing students grow, build momentum, and begin to believe in their own abilities — that’s the most rewarding part of the work. I also make math YouTube videos! Feel free to check them out to get a better idea of how I teach to a more general audience and explain concepts: (concealed information)

As a tutor, my approach is rooted in adaptability and evidence-based teaching. I understand that every student learns differently, so I tailor my instruction to match each learner’s needs and strengths. While I draw from research-based practices aligned with the science of learning, I remain flexible — whether a student needs visual explanations, step-by-step problem solving, or a focus on conceptual understanding, I meet them where they are. Typically, I begin lessons with a brief check-in to assess understanding of previous material and to identify current goals or challenges. From there, we’ll work through targeted problems, clarify underlying concepts, and develop effective strategies for approaching similar questions independently. I'm a big proponent of the Socratic method and so I always encourage questions and aim to build both skill and confidence through this. What sets me apart is my combination of deep subject knowledge and formal training in education. I hold a math degree from the University of Toronto and am currently pursuing a Master of Teaching at OISE. With over five years of tutoring experience across a range of ages and abilities, I’ve worked with students from elementary school through to high school. My lessons are ideal for students in Grades 1–12, including those preparing for standardized exams (e.g., AP Calculus), seeking to close learning gaps, or simply wanting to build a stronger foundation in math. Looking forward to helping you or your child feel more confident in math!
