About Sumit
My academic journey has not always been about simply “being good at studying”. A lot of my progress came from learning how to learn properly, understanding metacognition, improving my study strategies, and figuring out how to approach difficult content in a way that actually made sense. This is a big part of why I want to teach.
I know how overwhelming NCEA and early university study can feel, especially when subjects are taught in a way that makes students feel like they just have to memorize everything. I want to help students move beyond that. My goal is to make difficult topics feel clearer, more connected, and more manageable.
I enjoy teaching because I like seeing the moment when something finally “clicks” for a student. I want to help students build confidence, develop a deeper understanding of what they are learning, and gain study skills they can carry with them beyond a single test or exam.

My approach to tutoring is centred on helping students build a genuine understanding of what they are learning, rather than relying on brute memorisation. I aim to help students make deep connections with the topic, link new ideas to things they already understand, and develop the confidence to explain concepts in their own words.
In my lessons, I focus on breaking difficult ideas down into clear, manageable steps. I like to check understanding as we go, use examples, and help students recognise the underlying patterns behind a topic. My goal is for students to not only know what the answer is, but also why it makes sense.
A typical lesson is around 45 minutes, which I find is a good length for staying focused while still having enough time to explain concepts, practise questions, and review any areas of confusion.
I have experience tutoring students at my high school, and my own academic journey has shaped the way I teach. I completed NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 with Excellence, received Dux Litterarum, studied Software Engineering at Victoria University of Wellington, completed a Biomed pre-med year at the University of Auckland, and am now a second-year MBChB medical student at the University of Auckland. During my time at UoA, I achieved a 9.0 GPA.
A big part of my journey has been learning how to learn. I have spent a lot of time developing my understanding of metacognition, study strategies, and how to approach difficult content effectively. I try to pass these skills on to my students so they can become more independent and confident learners.
My lessons are suited for NCEA Levels 1–3 students studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra, Calculus and Statistics. I can also support students beginning university-level study in introductory biomedical science topics, including biochemistry, anatomy and physiology.
