Learn more about Aroua

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Arabic fluently because it is my native language, growing up in Algeria. As for English, I became fluent through my education and global experiences. My passion for STEM, international projects, and events, like the Hult Prize and working with the AIU STEAM Club, have really pushed me to master English to communicate and collaborate effectively across borders.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For Arabic, I'd say Ibn Khaldun represents the deep intellectual history and legacy of the Arab world. His work in sociology and history still resonates today. As for English, Elon Musk comes to mind. His innovative mindset in technology and space exploration aligns perfectly with my own interests and aspirations in STEM, particularly my dream of becoming an astronaut.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

In Arabic, I love the phrase "Inshallah" (God willing). It reflects the sense of hope and faith that things will happen when the time is right. In English, I like the phrase "Think outside the box" because it captures the essence of creativity and problem-solving, something I constantly strive for in my projects and initiatives.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking both Arabic and English matters to me because it connects me to two rich, diverse cultures. Arabic keeps me rooted in my identity and heritage, while English allows me to participate in the global STEM community, collaborate on international projects, and pursue my dreams on a larger scale.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

For Arabic, one challenge is its complexity - especially the grammar and classical Arabic, which is quite different from dialects. Immersing yourself in literature and speaking regularly can help. For English, the vast amount of idiomatic expressions can be confusing. I found that surrounding myself with English-speaking environments, through my university and STEM activities, made a huge difference.
  • Do you have a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school?

One valuable experience was when I first participated in the TechGirls program and visited NASA. Communicating in English was a bit nerve-wracking, but it pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was the turning point where I realized how crucial mastering English would be for my future goals in STEM and space exploration.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My move from Algeria to Malaysia to study at Albukhary International University has been transformative. It helped me not only improve my English skills through daily interactions but also exposed me to different cultures and perspectives. Travelling for international competitions and STEM initiatives also enhanced my language proficiency as I had to network and present ideas in English.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I believe what makes me a "Superprof" in language is my ability to bridge cultures and communicate complex ideas, particularly in the fields of STEM and education. My experiences in founding and leading the AIU STEAM Club, competing in international programs, and working on social impact initiatives have required strong communication skills in both Arabic and English. These experiences have sharpened my ability to teach, mentor, and inspire others across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
