Here is a quote from a hero of mine.

"Jowhuanna Catalanotto is one of the most hard-working students I've ever taught. When provided with concepts and ideas, he does not simply work on them until he can correctly play them. He uses them as fuel to feed a passionate exploration into a whole new setting, committing to developing a versatile vocabulary in all settings of music. Not to mention, he's an honest and genuine person". - JP Bouvet

I have been working professionally in the industry for over 11 years, I am deeply studied in the craft of drumming, and I have worked to support a wide array of individuals with all sorts of challenges, levels of ability & backgrounds.

In the lessons, we use a foundational approach, building skills in a modular way. We start from the ground up, systematically developing a playing style that’s comprehensive and flexible, with everything tying together as you progress.

It's all about building your own inter-related network of tools and understanding, so you can really feel confident to play and get creative in your solo practice/ musical ventures.

Content of the lessons include:
+ Hand & foot technique.
+ Developing time keeping and truly understanding rhythm.
+ Playing all different styles. Funk, Soul, Rock, Afro-Cuban, Latin, Jazz, Samba.. you name it!
+ Working with Ostinatos to gain independence and freedom. Coordination.
+ How to practice, learning to trouble shoot, understanding how we learn.
+ Ear training, music theory and notation.
+ Learning songs.
+ Polyrhythms.
+ Drum solos, phrasing, permutations, morphing vocabulary into settings and themes.
+ Professionalism, preparing for rehearsals and gigs.
+ Focus and state of mind, relaxation, effortlessness. Breath & postural awareness.
+ Developing your unique voice and creativity.
+ Anything that interests and inspires you!

There is a central thread to all learning, it's ensuring that we are present with the sound and ourselves. Through all the material we cover, we are learning how to learn, finding out what approach works best for us, and understanding more deeply the mechanics of music as a whole.

It is very important to me that creative people - be they just planting the seeds in their musical journey, or reaping the fruits of years of work and consistent effort - have the tools they need at their disposal to develop creatively and master their craft, from a state of total wellbeing.

Which is why, as best I can, I consider the total person moment to moment. This ensures that their learning journey is catered directly to them, and the individual can progress in their own way & time, while maintaining a steady sense of direction and focus.

I’ve been playing for over 20 years, primarily self-taught, working through DVDs and books from the masters. My journey continued through college and university, and along the way, I’ve had the privilege of learning directly from some of my heroes, including JP Bouvet, Mike Johnston, Gabor Dornyei, Pete Cater, and Pat Davey.

It was during my years studying in London that I gained a lot of experience teaching and performing. Working with artists such as BAD NERVES, Iolanda (Eurovision) and Raquel Martins - & countless other professional gigs.

These experiences have shaped my approach and deepened my understanding of drumming, allowing me to combine various methods and perspectives to help others achieve their musical goals.

Here is what some of my students have to say about me:

"My son has been learning with Jowhuanna for over 1.5 years. We even managed remote learning through lockdown. Jowhuanna is patient and creative and definitely a role model for my teen. No 2 lessons are the same, my boy always leaves his lessons fizzing with enthusiasm. He now feels confident in his abilities to want to participate in a band in the future. Can highly recommend Jowhuanna for absolute beginners or those who are self-taught and want some pointers". - Shelby Akosa

"Jowhuanna is a really great teacher. He has taken me from a total beginner, never held sticks, to being able to play in time. His knowledge of music and instruments and understanding of his students' needs means that he is able to give appropriate instruction and support while keeping it fun. Jowhuanna is also extremely patient. I would recommend him to everybody at any standard". - Jackie Holding

"Picked up drumming in my 30s with no musical background and Jowhuanna's lessons have been a great way to learn the basics and progress! He has a good balance between teaching things the 'right way' and letting us focus on things that take my interest, which makes lessons a lot of fun while I can see steady improvement! Continued lessons remotely during lockdown restrictions, which worked well". - Peter Sellen
