About Evelyn

Nice to meet you! I'm Evelyn, a front-end developer who did her bachelor's at the University of Waterloo in a double-major computer science and finance program. I recently finished my graduate certificate program at Sheridan College in Digital Product Design and am well-versed in all things front-end. People often describe me as being empathetic and a great explainer. I'm a huge believer that to be a good teacher you must be able to relate to whoever is on the other side of the table. My journey as a student is proven by my academic excellence; I was on the University of Waterloo's Dean's Honors List consecutively throughout my undergraduate program, and I won the Sheridan's Silver Medalist award, given to the graduate with the highest cumulative program average.

About the lesson

My approach to teaching is a highly empathetic one - to me, there are no dumb questions or unteachable students, just a different required approach! I always start a lesson with gauging a student's level of understanding in the subject. This helps me understand where the student is coming from and allows me to curate the best learning experience for the student so that they can be taught in a way that suits them best. Communication is key in teaching and learning, and I foster that in my classroom environment by encouraging questions and honesty about things that aren't clear.

Specifically to computer science, a lot of concepts are logic-based, so for the first few lessons, I focus on building a good foundation and intuition to problem-solving for my students. Students will also work on a project of their own choosing, which will incorporate concepts that they learnt to reinforce the material. Learning works best when the student has interest in the material, so I encourage students to choose something that they're interested in!

I excel in teaching middle schoolers to high schoolers, but I also have experience teaching first year to second year students in university. If you are a beginner in your computer programming career or have concepts you need help understanding, I'm a highly qualified tutor for you!
