About Justin
Hi! I'm Justin, a native Mandarin speaker and Finance undergraduate at the University of Toronto. I achieved an IELTS score of 7.0, so I can explain Mandarin clearly in English, especially for complete beginners. If Chinese tones, pronunciation, or characters feel intimidating, don't worry — I'll help you learn them step by step in a relaxed and practical way.
Having studied in both Chinese and English-speaking academic environments, I understand the challenges of learning and communicating in a second language. I believe that learning Mandarin should not only be about memorizing vocabulary and grammar, but also about building the confidence to actually use the language in real-life situations.
As a native Mandarin speaker, I can help students develop natural pronunciation, accurate tones, useful everyday vocabulary, and more authentic ways of expressing themselves. For beginners, I can use English when necessary to explain difficult Chinese words, grammar, pronunciation, and cultural differences, making the learning process much easier and less stressful.
I can also introduce Chinese culture, common expressions, internet slang, and the differences between textbook Chinese and the Mandarin that people actually use in everyday conversations. My goal is to help you learn Chinese that feels natural, practical, and useful.
I am patient, responsible, and easy to communicate with. I understand that every student learns at a different pace, so my lessons are flexible and personalized. I always try to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and practicing their Mandarin without pressure.
Whether you are completely new to Mandarin or already have some experience and want to improve your speaking, pronunciation, or everyday communication, I would be happy to personalize the lessons around your goals.
I look forward to meeting students from different backgrounds and helping you become more confident in Mandarin while sharing Chinese language and culture with you!

As a native Mandarin speaker and an undergraduate Finance student at the University of Toronto, I want to make learning Chinese practical, comfortable, and enjoyable. I understand that Mandarin can seem difficult at first, especially because of pronunciation, tones, and Chinese characters, so I focus on helping students build confidence step by step.
My teaching style is flexible and personalized. Instead of using the same method for every student, I adjust my lessons based on each student's level, goals, and interests. For beginners, I usually start with Pinyin, tones, basic vocabulary, simple sentence structures, and useful everyday expressions. For students who already have some experience with Chinese, I focus more on conversation, pronunciation correction, vocabulary development, reading, and natural ways of expressing ideas.
A typical lesson begins with a short review of what we learned previously, followed by new vocabulary or expressions. We then practice them through examples, conversations, questions, and real-life situations. I believe that actually using the language is one of the best ways to improve, so I encourage students to speak as much Mandarin as they feel comfortable with during the lesson.
What sets me apart is that I grew up speaking Mandarin and am currently studying in Canada, so I understand both Chinese and English-speaking learning environments. I can explain Chinese expressions and cultural differences in a way that is easier for English-speaking students to understand. I also want my lessons to feel relaxed and supportive rather than like a stressful classroom.
My lessons are suitable for complete beginners, beginner and intermediate Mandarin learners, high school or university students, and adults who are interested in learning Chinese. Whether your goal is everyday conversation, improving pronunciation, preparing for travel, communicating with Chinese-speaking friends, or simply learning Mandarin as a new language, I can personalize the lessons around your goals.
