About Gemmalee
In high school, I formally tutored Latin Literature, and in college, I am the only humanities major amongst my STEM major friends. They are subject to my excited ramblings about cultural linguistic antiquities and geography trivia facts. However, one thing I have always heard from people is that I explain higher concepts in ways that are simple and easily digestible for those not familiar or comfortable with the subject. I am also the friend group's designated proofreader for major essays, and one of my friends told me she had always had a tough time with English because she was bad at it. What I told her, and what I would like anyone struggling with English to know, is that just because a subject does not come as naturally to you does not mean you are inherently bad at it. Rather, we should approach these topics with the mindset of: I might not have enough practice with it, but I would like to get better. Often, we hold ourselves back from our true potential, and my goal with all of my tutees has always been to help them gain an organic interest to improve within the subject at hand.

My teaching methods use the structure of engaging lecture and active recall, utilizing games to reinforce concepts in an enjoyable manner. For English creative writing, I would go over the requirements of any assignment or parameters, then make it more than just regurgitating words and knowledge.
I would pinpoint what the tutee seems to enjoy about working with words, and hone in on points for improvement during the process of writing. For example, using a wheel randomizer putting different literary devices together for an assignment requiring usage of devices adds an element of excitement and challenges the tutee's creative abilities.
I have a deep love for words in my daily life, whether it is playing word games, reading articles, stories, and blogs, and I myself publish fictional works as well. I believe English gets a bad rap among students nowadays because it is a frustrating subject, but it doesn't have to be. I aim to inspire through my own interest in English, and show that it can increase one's capacity for expression and reflection.
The lessons are for high schoolers or first year undergraduate students, who seek assistance with their academic English subjects or essays involving creative writing.
