About Richard
Richard is a freelance musician, educator, composer, orchestrator, and music producer based in Los Angeles. He completed a Bachelors of Music in Tuba Performance and Composition from Azusa Pacific University graduating cum laude. He continued his studies further at APU by completing a Masters of Music in Composition with the help of a performance assistantship graduating cum laude.
As a musician, he plays tuba and bass in all styles and loves collaborating with other like–minded musicians in creating new music. This love of music creativity also fuels his compositional interests. Although primarily trained in classical and jazz mediums, Richard enjoys learning about new music and has continued his music studies at LACC learning about Latin and West African music. This life–long learner mindset has enabled Richard to become an effective educator in teaching and growing students to become the best they can be.
As a music producer, Richard has recorded and mixed his personal projects and those of his students and peers. To improve on these skills, he went to LACC to complete a certificate in Music Technology and hopes to learn about cinema sound while growing in his other skills. Richard also maintains a private studio that offers both individual and group lessons.
Thankful for the opportunities and teachings given to him, Richard hopes to give back to his students as generously and aims to equip them with the skills they need to succeed in their creative/academic journey.

Ever wondered how music works and why music has a natural progression and understanding to it? Learning about music theory is the secret ingredient needed to unlock the analytical ability in understanding why music sounds great. This is how leading artists use theory to create structural songs that are easy to follow as a musician and are pleasing to the audience’s ear.
If you are a music aficionado that loves to analyze forms and structures in music, or someone who would love to write music one day, learning about music theory will help you achieve those goals.
Music Theory is a huge passion of mine and as such, I like to go in depth on the subject.
I can teach basic music fundamentals to those who don’t know how to read music notation to advanced analysis in regards to form and harmonic progression.
I can teach the traditional Classical Music Theory that focuses on voice leading, simple harmonic progressions, and scales.
I can also teach Commercial Music Theory and its roots in jazz that focus on modal harmony, note–scale relationships, and extended harmony.
Being a musician and composer has helped me internalize these concepts very well, and I can explain them in a multitude of ways to help students understand a topic that can be very dense at times to grasp.
