About Eugenie

I am a teacher, academic, and translator, guiding students through Korean language, literature, and culture. Teaching Korean is more than grammar and vocabulary for me—it is about opening doors to communication, culture, and creativity. I love helping students gain confidence and enjoy the process of learning, whether through conversation, exams, or K-culture. I first began tutoring while studying for my part-time PhD in English Literature at Kingston University, teaching GCSE and A-level English to Korean and Asian students. In 2019, as I settled permanently in the UK, I began working in translation and running Korean (mainly film and literary events). That same year, I launched the Korean course at Kingston University. Through this journey, I not only developed lasting friendships with learners but also discovered new beauty in my own language that I had never noticed as a native speaker. I hope to share this sense of discovery with my students by guiding them step by step in their learning journey. Whether your goals are academic, practical, or cultural, I am confident our journey will be exciting.

About the lesson

I have taught Korean at Kingston University for over six years, leading Levels 1–4, and I bring tried-and-tested materials and a full curriculum to my private lessons. Each session is around 60 minutes (though conversations often run over because we’re too engaged to stop!). I am an empathetic, open, and supportive tutor, and I tailor lessons to your goals—whether that’s improving conversation, preparing for exams, or exploring Korean culture. As a Gothic scholar currently writing a book on Korean modernity and popular culture, I also love weaving in thought-provoking cultural discussions. My approach is interactive, creative, and flexible, helping learners of all ages build confidence while enjoying the process. I’ve taught everyone from university students to senior learners in their 70s (often the most passionate of all!). Beyond teaching, I run Nabillera, an online magazine for contemporary Korean literature, and curate Korean books for cultural centres across Europe. My other academic interest lies in fandom studies—I was part of the committee for BTS: An Interdisciplinary Project in 2020. Recently, I’ve dipped my toe into idol culture (I now have my own favourite!), so if you’re into K-pop or literature, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of fun. I usually teach online, but I also enjoy arranging in-person lessons occasionally when circumstances allow.
