About Marcus

I began my teaching career teaching German in an international school in South India. I then qualified as a primary school teacher in the UK and taught for 12 years. After completing my Masters in Psychology of Education and a PhD, I went to work in Higher Education training the next generation of primary school teachers. In that role, I have assessed thousands of written assignments and presentations and supported hundreds of students to develop their academic writing.
I am a passionate learner of languages; I speak some French, German, Portuguese, Spanish (and very dubious Hungarian). I therefore understand grammar and can help to develop your academic writing, even if English is not your first language.

About the lesson

I would try to make sure that each lesson supports you to develop your academic writing skills in whatever area you wish. In advance of a typical lesson, I would ask you to send me an example of your writing. This could be from the essay, or presentation that you are currently working on. This gives us something to work from during the lesson.
For example, you may want to develop your ability to think and write more critically (this is often something that students get as feedback in university assignments). In that case, we could look at the writing you had sent and work together to find ways that it could be made more critical. We might then look at other paragraphs from the same assignment and try to develop the language and structure to make it more critical. My aim is to develop you as an independent academic writer, so that you no longer need my support.
