About Shannon
I take my role as a tutor very seriously and approach every student with professionalism, respect, and dedication. As a graduate student at the University of Florida pursuing a master’s degree in medical microbiology and biochemistry, I bring both strong academic training and real-world scientific understanding to every lesson. I have extensive experience working with complex STEM subjects and explaining them in a clear, approachable way that is accessible to students at all levels. I am reliable, well-prepared, and committed to providing high-quality instruction during every session. Each lesson is thoughtfully planned based on the student’s needs, and I consistently adapt my teaching strategies to ensure the material is understood rather than memorized. I maintain clear communication with students (and parents, when appropriate) and always strive to create a respectful, supportive learning environment. My goal is not only academic improvement, but also helping students build confidence in their abilities. I believe that with patience, structure, and encouragement, every student can succeed in challenging subjects. Students can expect a tutor who is knowledgeable, organized, and genuinely invested in their progress.

As a tutor, my goal is not just to help students get through an assignment or exam, but to help them truly understand the material and feel confident using it independently. I begin by getting to know each student’s learning style, academic goals, and any areas where they feel stuck or discouraged. From there, I create personalized lesson plans tailored to how they learn best, whether that involves visual explanations, step-by-step problem solving, real-world examples, or guided practice.
I place a strong emphasis on mastering the fundamentals behind each topic. Once a solid foundation is built, we gradually layer in more complex concepts so students can see how everything connects, rather than memorizing isolated facts. I encourage questions at every step and create a supportive, low-pressure environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and learning from them.
A typical lesson begins with a brief check-in and review of previous material, followed by a clear explanation of new concepts. We then work through examples together, applying the material in a way that reinforces understanding. I regularly check for comprehension, adjust my approach as needed, and end each session with a summary and plan for next steps so students know exactly what to focus on moving forward.
What sets me apart as a tutor is my broad subject expertise combined with a patient, individualized teaching style. As a graduate student in medical microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Florida, I tutor a wide range of subjects including biology (from general biology to microbiology, genetics, neuroscience, evolution, biochemistry, and astrobiology), high school and college-level chemistry (Chemistry I & II), math from pre-algebra through calculus, physics I & II, and other science courses. This allows me to help students make connections across disciplines and approach complex topics with confidence.
My lessons are designed for middle school, high school, and college students, whether they are preparing for exams, keeping up with coursework, strengthening foundational skills, or building confidence in challenging STEM subjects. I work with students at all levels and am especially passionate about helping those who feel overwhelmed or unsure realize that they can succeed with the right support and approach.
