About Xing Yu

I am currently a student at the University of Cambridge studying maths. Previously, I had studied A levels in maths, further maths, chemistry, and physics, with grades A*A*A*A*; I also achieved 11 grade 9s for my GCSEs, including a 9 in AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics. In addition to this, I have also participated in the UKMT maths challenges and British Mathematical Olympiad in the past, so I am also familiar with different styles of question.

I have made commitments to continue teaching maths to GCSE/A-level students, helping those who need extra support with their learning outside of their standard lessons, as well as those who are more able and wanting to gain further insights into maths at A level or problems from maths competitions (e.g. UKMT maths challenges).

Currently, I am happy to teach any qualification up to RQF Level 3 (i.e. up to A level) in maths or further maths, and I would be more than happy to stretch students to give them their maximum potential!

The students which have been taught by me have seen massive improvements in their understanding, and have gone on to do extremely well in their GCSEs, with improvements by up to 2 or 3 grades in a single year. Many students were very glad to be pursuing their mathematical studies in their further education, and I continue to be supporting them as well.

Outside of my studies, I not only enjoy continuing to find fascinating facts about maths, but also enjoy being a passionate photographer, science enthusiast and pianist. I also work for many open days, so happy to help anyone who is more interested or would like guidance on their next steps to A levels or university.

About the lesson

My lesson structure is very flexible, depending on individual needs, in order to accommodate for different learning styles, which will be outlined at the beginning of every session. Generally, these sessions would be centred around the student, and I would be happy to cover anything from taught content to exam preparation/marking.

I can use a variety of common software, whether that would be Zoom, Google Classroom, and more, and I would be more than happy to try different options to see what works best for students. I will usually used a share whiteboard, but there is no obligation for students to be able to write on their screens.

Generally, I usually teach on Saturdays/Sundays, but depending on my availability, I may also be able to do weekday evenings. During normal school holidays, I would happily be able to add extra sessions for students. For convenience, students also have the option to have a mixture of online lessons, alongside in-person lessons, which can be provided on request.

Note for in-person lessons: I will mainly be available for in-person lessons during school holidays, but feel free to reach out to me to discuss any details about this, as I may not always be in London.
