About Rhys

Although it may sound somewhat cliché, I have known that I was destined to teach since the age of 16. When I was 16, I was employed by my own school as an Academic Mentor for five More-Able students of French. The joy of teaching soon became apparent, as I ran French/Spanish after-school clubs in two different local schools as well. During my degree, I took this a step further by working for a year in a local school, with A level German students. I have always maintained a positive approach to the classroom and students have enjoyed my teaching over the years. There are testimonials on my website to vouch for this!

About the lesson

As a graduate of the University of Cambridge, I have been fortunate enough to have been taught by those who are genuinely recognised as "world-class". My teaching philosophy is to combine the best ways in which I, myself, was taught, with best practices from my own teaching experience to date, along with the theory underpinning the best pedagogical outcomes. I am very keen on live-writing, working through (and developing model answers), and "DIRT" (Direct Improvement Response Time), in particular.

In a world that had to rapidly transition to virtual education, I am now fortunate in that I can safely label my experience of remote teaching as successful. With a substantial portion of my PGCE completed during challenging COVID lockdowns, I seamlessly adapted to the digital realm, ensuring an uninterrupted learning experience for my students. What this meant, too, is that I was observed by other professionals whilst teaching online and also had a range tailored learning opportunities for online teaching (via my PGCE provider) which many qualified teachers have not had. Not only did I excel in delivering engaging online lessons, but I also took the initiative to lead departmental inspiration sessions online, sharing innovative online teaching ideas with my teaching peers.

Further to this, I developed a KS3 "Year 9" curriculum, delivered at Rugby School between 2019 and 2021. I attended various CPD courses for A-level English Language, in particular, earning recognition as a 'Department Expert' at Rugby School. I've even taught less-common GCSE Literature set texts, adding to my experience.

I am offering KS3 English (with a lot of flexibility in terms of desired curriculum), iGCSE English, GCSE English, and A level English (Language or Literature).
