About Irene
Experienced tutor specialising in university admissions, politics, political economy and international relations. I support applicants preparing for competitive university admissions, including personal statements, admissions tests, interviews and academic writing. I teach A Level and university students, and have experience teaching undergraduate students at the London School of Economics.
Alongside teaching, I have worked across government, think tanks and academia, which allows me to connect academic ideas to contemporary political and institutional issues. I aim to make demanding material clear, structured and engaging, while helping students develop confidence in their own thinking and communication.
Part of my own education was in French and Chinese, so I understand the additional challenges faced by students studying complex subjects in a second language. I have experience working with both UK and international students.
I can support students with subject understanding, essay writing, dissertations, exam preparation, university admissions and building long-term academic confidence.

My teaching is shaped around the level, goals and learning style of each student. I focus on breaking difficult concepts into manageable parts, showing how topics connect to one another, and using current affairs, historical examples and practical cases to make theory easier to grasp and remember.
I also encourage students to see politics and economics historically. Institutions and systems can appear fixed or natural when taught in abstract terms, but understanding how they developed through conflict, political choices and social change can make difficult topics much clearer and more engaging.
Alongside subject knowledge, I help students develop confidence in discussion, essay writing and independent judgement. Strong academic work is not only about memorising content, but about learning how to think clearly, form persuasive arguments and communicate ideas effectively.
I can also support exam technique, coursework, dissertations and university admissions preparation. Having studied at Oxford, UCL and LSE, I can offer practical guidance on navigating demanding academic environments and competitive applications.

- Excellent student, very thoughtful and lovely to teachIrene's response :
Perfect! Working with Irene honestly made a big difference to my confidence and how I approach politics. She’s really good at explaining complicated ideas in a way that actually makes sense, and she pushes you to think a bit deeper rather than just memorising things. Her knowledge of the Oxford admissions process was also super helpful. She helped me get what interviewers are actually looking for, suggested really good reading and gave really detailed feedback.
- Jane is a really wonderful student, curious, smart and critical. I look forward to continue working with her :)Irene's response :

Irene was such a help for my niece when she needed it: always supportive, attentive, and very ready to adjust to her needs. Whether in preparation for exams or for her end of year essays, Irene was there to help her navigate the tricky parts of the curriculum. I'd definitely recommend her to parents out there!
Irene was one of the best lecturers I had at university. She has a real talent for making political economy feel alive, and for showing why the ideas actually matter rather than just teaching theories from a textbook. I always looked forward to her classes because they were challenging without ever feeling intimidating, and she encouraged us to question things instead of simply accepting the right answer. She also cared a lot about her students. She was generous with her time, gave really thoughtful feedback on essays, and was always willing to talk through ideas if you were stuck. I came away from her course feeling much more confident in my own thinking and writing.
I had the privilege of having Irene as a tutor and she was fantastic. I would definitely recommend her to others. She was patient, kind, and always took the time to explain things to me in a way that was straightforward and easy to understand.
