About David

I have studied the ancient world since I was a child fascinated by the archaeology and mythology of Egypt, the Aztecs, and countless other cultures of antiquity.

As an undergraduate at the University of Toronto he completed double majors in anthropology and the archaeology of the ancient Near East. I then went on to earn an AM and a PhD in Hebrew Bible and archaeology from Harvard University.
He has excavated and surveyed all over southern Ontario and at the coastal site of Ashkelon in Israel. My dissertation, "Can These Bones Live Again? An Analysis of the Persian Period Non-Candid Mammalian Faunal Remains from Tel Ashkelon, "examined a poorly understood time period at this important site and introduced him to his current specialty of zooarchaeology -- the study of animal remains from archaeological sites.

I have lectured publicly since the 1990s and have done so in three different countries and three different languages. I have been a course instructor at Wilfrid Laurier University and Saint Mary's University since 2015.

I am currently the Senior Zooarchaeologist at the Tayinat Archaeological Project in Türkiye.

I live in Waterloo, Ontario with my wife Jamie, our cat Cuyler, and our dog Eligh.

About the lesson

While I specialize in Near Eastern archaeology and history, I am also versed in North, Central, and South American archaeology, ancient Rome and Greece.

I am also a Hebrew Bible (Old Testament) scholar.

My specialty within archaeology is zooarchaeology (the analysis of animal bones from archaeological sites).

I can teach to any level. I have more than 30 years experience teaching, public speaking, and tutoring.
