About Matthew
My name is Matthew Joye. Not only am I a UCLA graduate with an English major, I also wrote articles for the Daily Bruin from 2013-2016. During my time at the Daily Bruin, I was the lead reporter for UCLA football and men’s basketball beat coverage. After graduating from UCLA in 2016, I took a job at the NFL, where I’ve written the copy and analyzed the data for all of the NFL App’s push notifications over the last eight years. The goal of my tutoring will be to find a way to relate the course readings to the modern-day life of a young student. I know that a young student might oftentimes feel like there’s a massive divide between the subject matter of the course readings and the subject matter of their everyday life. I’m trying to make the course material feel more relatable and palatable to that prospective young student.

In my lessons, we’ll learn how to effectively identify key quotes from the “required reading” books in the course. Once the key quotes are identified, we’ll outline them and begin to ideate on a thesis and topic sentences for the essay. Then, we will delve into how the highlighted quotes can be integrated into the essay’s body paragraphs.
