About Michelle

I am a recent UCL honours graduate, having received my bachelor’s diploma in September 2025 with a 2:1 in Anthropology. I have always been academically inclined, particularly in essay-based subjects such as English. Having developed a passion for reading and writing from primary-school age, I have always excelled academically and strongly believe that it is due to the strong, structured learning environment I experienced growing up. In primary school, I was always pushed to read at home with my parents as well as within school, and quickly progressed to the highest reading and literacy levels attainable. Thanks to this, I developed a natural curiosity for the art of language and writing, and recognise the importance of helping children develop a healthy relationship with learning by fundamentally instilling a desire to learn and gain knowledge, both at school and at home.

My early stages of academic development led me to constantly strive for excellence within my academic journey, so that by the time I reached secondary school, I saw education and learning as a privilege, rather than a chore. Thanks to my healthy background in learning, I did excel academically throughout school, achieving 10 GCSEs in Year 11 all at grades 7-9 (A-A*), including grade 9s in English Literature, English Language and Spanish among other subjects. Prior to this I had achieved an A* in my Portuguese GCSE, having taken it in Year 9 as my home language qualification. Following this, I took my Portuguese A-Level in Year 12 (delayed by a year due to COVID), achieving an A* and subsequently achieving A*AB in Spanish, English Literature and Economics respectively in Year 13.

Due to my academic success, I was offered a place at all five of my university choices (UCL, LSE, SOAS, Bristol and Durham) to study Anthropology, and eventually chose to study at UCL due to my preference for its curriculum. I chose Anthropology in part to try and satisfy my thirst for knowledge on what it means to be human, particularly on a social and cultural aspect, which I believe stems from my love of learning that I'd developed from young.

Career-wise, I am not only a budding anthropologist but have also always had a passion for writing and performance arts, enough to pursue a career in both. I have been developing a series of fantasy novels since early teenage years, and following a year-long training programme at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre, have been signed to an acting agent. I owe my talent for writing and acting to my early childhood passion for reading, as it helped me develop my command of the English language as well as my own personal writing style, and allowed me to realise that I liked acting out the dialogue in books and thus embodying the characters I was reading about to the fullest extent.

Recently, I have been working as a nanny through Koru Kids, although my contract is due to terminate in a few weeks as the family
is moving and I am
seeking new employment opportunities. The family I currently nanny for has an 8 year-old daughter who is privately educated, and I frequently help her with her homework and 11+ exercises. As she is an avid reader, we frequently discuss books she has read recently and look at how she might apply some of the writing techniques in school. For example, this term she was able to correctly answer a question in class about the meaning of ‘onomatopoeia’ and how to use it, despite it being their first lesson learning the word, as I had introduced it to her a week prior while we were doing English homework. I am also able to recommend age-appropriate, engaging fiction books which also have educational elements to them (e.g: historical fictions useful for history facts, science fiction for scientific facts, etc.) for her to read, allowing her to further expand her vocabulary and general knowledge.

As I hope I've communicated effectively, I am who I am and where I am today due to my strong academic foundations and the support and guidance of the adults who cared enough to fuel this. Education and knowledge is the biggest privilege in the world, and change for the better cannot occur in its absence. Hence, I would like to be a part of this change and inspire future generations on their journey to a fulfilling future, whatever that may be.

About the lesson

I have experience in tutoring Years 7 and 8 as a prefect and mentor within my secondary school during my time there, as well as two years of childcare (nannying) experience. This has allowed me to understand the importance of developing a safe, supportive and enriching environment in which to help children/students build their confidence and skills within their learning, and therefore grow and adapt in terms of performance.

I place an emphasis on guided learning, allowing students to gain further confidence in a subject by firstly being able to identify areas they struggle in and focusing on this, rather than building on what they are already comfortable with. This way, students are able to develop a well-rounded comprehension of the subject, and become more secure in answering questions on a general level, thus effectively progressing towards their learning targets.
Following successful achievement of this, the goal is to begin to transition towards higher-level material and effectively ''zoom in'' on specific techniques that would add to their newfound command over the subject as a whole, and therefore allow the student to progress further beyond their learning targets, entering the realm of academic excellence where they can strive towards those top grades.

Lessons should typically range between 1-2 hours depending on academic necessities, learning levels and frequency of lessons per week.
With a provisional schedule of 1 lesson per week, GCSE level students would benefit from a duration of 1.5 hours or more so as to allow sufficient time for progression.
Primary school children would benefit from a duration of 45 minutes to an hour, with one hour lessons being recommended for students approaching SATs level (Years 5 and 6).
