About Alex
I am a writer and academic from London in the final year of my PhD. In 2018, I graduated with a first in English Literature and Creative Writing from Aberystwyth University, receiving the Jem Poster award for achieving the highest overall grade in the class. That year, my first two short stories were published (in Bandit Fiction and Prole Magazine). I went on to complete my MA at University College London, which focused on literature from 1849 to 2018. During this time, I began tutoring students studying for their GCSEs, A levels and undergraduate degrees. I also received a scholarship to present a paper at Kent's Paris campus, and presented another at the Association for Welsh Writing in English conference. Upon finishing my MA, I was awarded a scholarship to return to Aberystwyth and complete a PhD in Creative Writing. During this time, I have continued tutoring alongside teaching university seminar classes in poetry, contemporary literature, literature pre 1800, prose writing and genre fiction. I have presented academic work at a South West Wales Doctoral training Partnership conference, another conference ran by the Centre for Welsh Politics and Society, and at Cardiff University after being asked to speak there. I have continued to publish prolifically, with work appearing in Abergavenny Small Press Literary Magazine, The Forge, Nawr, Cerasus and other places.

I believe tutoring is most effective when focused on the work. Rather than lecturing on literature or waxing lyrical on creativity, I prefer to understand my student's ideas, using these as a starting point for further development. This can be from a piece of work they have already completed, or something we put together in the lesson. From there, I can point to things the student is doing well, as well as where and how they can improve. I encourage students to ask questions, no matter how small they may seem. Often, it is the little nagging anxieties that can wreck perfectly good ideas. In short, any lesson I teach aims to be positive, encouraging, thorough, and, above all else, useful.
